It's interesting to see how many current Tesla owners are now expressing embarrassment at driving them in public, due to the now unavoidable associations with Musk's increasingly fascist behavior and statements, with many owners noting that they will never drive another one, and many prospective drivers saying they will now cancel and/or look elsewhere than Tesla.

Of course it's not fair for drivers (who bought into Teslas before Musk's true proclivities were obvious) to be faced with this, but that's what Musk has done to the brand -- single-handedly and with eyes wide open.

@lauren It is such a shame because before the bird site purchase the Tesla has helped the world know of alternative vehicle fuel types.
@lauren
Musk’s proclivities we’re apparent before … to anyone interested in learning about him.
No one should be surprised by his behavior now. He’s been a liar, a self promoting opportunist and a right winger for years.
@inklings The key words there are "anyone interested in learning about him." That was a fairly constrained group. Now many more people are very interested and are learning the truth.

@lauren yes, sadly. People were only too happy to ignore the obvious and latch onto the hype and PR surrounding him … confusing the product he’s peddling with him personally.

The media still loves to push the myth of the superhero entrepreneur / executive.

@inklings @lauren I'm generally forgiving of John & Jane Q public for failing to understand that Musk's image was crafted hype and misdirection, because we were awash in propaganda for a decade.

The media copied and pasted Musk's lies without even pantomiming false equivalence. Musk had skeptics and detractors. They were ignored.

For ten years, few checked Musk's previous promises or even pretended to care about his obvious mendacity.

@hydrocabron @lauren
Yep - as I mentioned the msm tends to glorify the ā€œsuccess storiesā€ and ignore their darker impulses.

It’s hard to see how the Musk story is much different than Henry Ford.

@inklings @hydrocabron I don't think H. Ford engaged in so much fantasy hyperbole about supposed products.

@lauren @hydrocabron

Disagree. He bought a newspaper to push his product and his management decisions eg paying double the hourly wage. However w all the caveats attached virtually no one actually got paid that wage.

Henry Ford and the Jews, the story Dearborn didn’t want told | Bridge Michigan

When a city-financed journal explored a darker side of the auto titan, Dearborn’s mayor banned its distribution and fired the writer. Public officials fail the public when they stifle serious journalism. It’s media’s role to step up.

@inklings @hydrocabron I'm aware of that. But did he every announce fantasy products and fantasy features as being "next year"? Hyperloop? Fully self drive? Cross-country tunnels? You know what I mean.

@lauren @hydrocabron true - he was more interested in authorizing antisemitic articles like ā€œThe International Jew.ā€

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/henryford-antisemitism/

Ford's Anti-Semitism

Ford lent authority to the anti-Semitic fears and assumptions of many Americans.

American Experience
@inklings @hydrocabron His views in that sphere are well known. A lot more so than Lovecraft's fans usually know.
@lauren @hydrocabron
Not sure why that’s relevant to the convo lol.
@inklings @hydrocabron Just that among famous people with such views, Ford is much more well known in that respect than various others.
@lauren @mattpotter As a household with a Tesla, this is a daily debate….
@jquillin @lauren @mattpotter Get a bumper sticker saying "I didn't know he was a Nazi when I bought it," and drive it as long as you want to.

@lauren

The last time a CEO destroyed a brand so completely so quickly was Gerald Rattner, CEO of a UK jewelers who called his products 'complete crap' in a private industry after dinner talk.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Ratner

I think the real problem here is Musk has been under severe financial pressure for 12-18 months and the Twitter purchase was intended to be a pretext for dumping $20B of stock at the peak without $TSLA cratering. I think Elmo figured it was worth paying $1B to cash out $20B.

Most big companies try to prevent bubbles in their stock price because what goes up, comes down. I remember back in the day the $MSFT folk talking about hiding a chubby etc. They were deliberately understating their results to avoid creating a price bubble during the dotcom boom.

SpaceX hasn't done anything on Starship for a year now. First sign something was up was when they lost their ability to launch at Boca Raton because they didn't bother to file the paperwork.

Tesla is in a huge cash crunch, the Chinese factory has cost billions and production is hobbled by zero COVID.

The really puzzling part is going after Dorsey now. Dorsey has the personal means to dump whatever it takes into Blue Sky just to spite Elmo. And he might even get the clue that Blue Sky should be a part of the Fediverse.

Regardless, my plan is to take the Threshold Key Infrastructure I have already built and work out how to apply it to take the Fediverse to the next level: Portable Internet accounts.

Mesh contact assertions are signed and can contain an update URI. So if we exchange our Mesh contacts, we each have each other's Mesh credentials, OpenPGP, S/MIME, Code Signing, Git commit signing, SSH authentication, etc. etc. And if we add or change something (Signal? Whatsapp? Everything?) then those are automatically added too.

Its all open source and open infrastructure. That is, you choose your Mesh service provider but you get to change at any time without penalty. And because Mesh contacts automatically update, the fact that Mesh accounts are portable makes all your other accounts portable as well.

Looking for for collaborators if you are looking for projects. Not looking to make anything commercial right now, this is like the Web, it is infrastructure and has to be an open public good to be useful.

@lauren I express no such embarrassment driving a Tesla. It's just a frickin' car, but it's one without exhaust pipes. As for Musk, he's on a mission to self-destruct, it seems, and the clock is now ticking loudly. I have confidence that even the board of Tesla, Inc. will in time realize that the damage Musk is doing to Tesla's brand, sales, and most importantly, sustainability mission, is now unacceptable, and they vote him out of any leadership role in the company. Musk has to know that.
@brianstorms @lauren I don’t think musk makes it another 6 months before he’s ousted
@lauren still, owing a Tesla is a way to support a company that has benefited from many state support and does not stop from bashing the state !
@lauren @ianbetteridge I remember how many people loudly cancelled their Model 3 reservations after he made an ass of himself at that time, only to buy one anyway and then feel publicly sad about owning one right now. People knew and bought them anyway.
@lauren I have to say that if I see anyone bragging about buying a new Tesla, I will think worse of them -- especially considering how many better choices there are now.
@jeffjarvis @lauren The Tesla is the "named their child Daenarys before watching 'The Bells' episode" of cars.
@lauren @jeffjarvis It’s amazing how quickly the Tesla went from a car for affluent liberals to a MAGA-mobile.
@captainslim @lauren Given that the Volkswagen went from the car of Nazis to hippies, I suppose there is symmetry somewhere in this.
@jeffjarvis @captainslim Notably, after Hitler was long out of the picture ...
@lauren @captainslim
I await the bumper sticker:
"Don't blame me. I bought by Tesla before Elon went batshit nazi crazy."
I'm sure glad I don't own one; I never will. And I question the judgment of anyone who buys one now.

@jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim

Note to self: start selling bumper stickers to Tesla owners that read ā€œMy next EV won’t run on hate.ā€

@ike @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim All this is a bit overdone. As much as I dislike Musk, Tesla is just a company that makes nice car (disclaimer I own one). Might as well stop eating because seeds come from Monsanto, stop driving your car or getting on the bus because oil you know. And don't get on the subway because electricity may come from coal or natural gas. This list could go on.
@theRealKanuk @ike @lauren @captainslim Condolences for your car, but I'm never buying a Musk product.
@jeffjarvis @ike @lauren @captainslim Don't get me wrong, I will look at other options next time. But I will say that my model Y is a great car. I went on a tour of the national parks during summer 2021, a 14000 miles 2-month trip, and it was a dream with this car. No other EV outside Tesla's could have done this with that much ease.
@theRealKanuk @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim At the very least, you’d have to be pissed that Elon is harming your potential resale value. (Not that he wasn’t messing with that already, with his irresponsible claims that within two years, every Tesla would be self-driving and would disrupt Uber/Lyft/taxis — and would instantly have a $250,000 value…)
@ike @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim I saw the graph but without further info it's not obvious that the price is down because of Musk. There are many other possible factors: gas price is down a lot from the highs, the supply of new EVs has increased (there's less waiting time) and in 2023 there will be subsidies. All of that is impacting EVs and their resale value. I keep my cars for a long time anyway.
@theRealKanuk @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim I look at it like this — I have a lot of regard for engineers, employees and line workers who make those things happen. The difference is that only a tiny percentage of people can name the leadership of Ford, GM, Toyota or Honda. Musk is a narcissist who is happy to have the world believe him to be the genius responsible for everything (which he is not.)

@theRealKanuk @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim Therefore, were I to consider such a sticker, it would be with the knowledge that people would interpret it within the spirit of its intent.

Phony Stark is an elitist, a con man, and grifter who has turned family wealth and a knack for subsidies into a personality cult. He’s too addicted to the accolades to understand that he’s now fueled by edgelords and hate.

@ike
Henry Ford was a Nazi. People still buy Fords (though not Jews) and aren't labeled Nazi sympathizers. One can buy a Ford and not sympathize with Musk.

@jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim

@theRealKanuk @ike @lauren @captainslim Henry Ford is long gone. Musk is here. I'm not buying his products.
@jeffjarvis
And I respect that. But we should be careful of not labeling people who might still want to get one. They're not inconsiderate or worst for it.
@ike @lauren @captainslim
@theRealKanuk @jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim I've said before, it's not *fair* that they will be so labeled now. The reality though is that they increasingly will be.
@lauren
Only if we choose to. People are applying their own values onto someone else whom they know nothing about. And I don't have to explain why that's wrong.
@jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim

@theRealKanuk @lauren @jeffjarvis @captainslim Am I going to thumb my nose or give a mid-digital salute to every Tesla on the road? No. (My sister has one.)

But am I going to nudge those buying one into a wider array of products? Probably.

And is this a major issue in my life? No. But it’s perfect for bumper-sticker slacktivism.

@lauren @jeffjarvis @theRealKanuk @ike @captainslim I think perhaps you do have to explain why it’s wrong for people to apply their own values to others. After all, isn’t that what the legal system does every day? Is it wrong for me to judge someone else for stealing, for example?
@mathew
Judging someone for stealing is one thing. Looking at someone's skin and ... well you know what I mean. Same concept applies to someone driving a Tesla.
@lauren @jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim
@theRealKanuk @mathew @jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim You don't choose your skin. You do choose to buy a Tesla. And today, anyone doing so knows full well what that will imply to many onlookers.

@lauren @theRealKanuk @mathew @jeffjarvis @captainslim

ā€œHey Alexa how do I gracefully exit a conversation on a mastodon thread?ā€

@ike @lauren @theRealKanuk @mathew @jeffjarvis @captainslim

Interesting question. In MS Outlook, there's an ignore conversation feature and I haven't seen it replicated in this type of app. Put in a feature request, maybe?

As for wading into the main convo here... hard pass, but interesting to see others discussing it.

@dc995
There's a "mute conversation" option in my app.
@ike @lauren @mathew @jeffjarvis @captainslim

@theRealKanuk @ike @lauren @mathew @jeffjarvis @captainslim

I just found that mute button you're referring to. Apparently there's a mute person or conversation if someone wants to hop of the ride. Thanks! @theRealKanuk

@lauren
Onlookers can project their values on me while driving my Tesla but I know why I'm driving it. (Hint: it has nothing to do with Musk).
@mathew @jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim
@theRealKanuk @mathew @lauren @jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim Yike. Drawing even a wobbly parallel between heckling owners of a car brand and racism...... ooooof 😬
@SuperTwaddle
Ok, maybe not the best example but my point is that we shouldn't infer behavior because we don't know that person. Now if the car has a bumper sticker that states "I love Musk", that'd be a different story.
@mathew @lauren @jeffjarvis @ike @captainslim
@theRealKanuk @ike @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim I think some might debate that Teslas are nice cars in 2022 after the build quality and questionable UI and control choices have gone unresolved or unaddressed. Teslas were great early runners of modern electric vehicles, but they had some real problems from the start that they got away with because they were young. Tesla is not young anymore.
@dhepworth
That's a different discussion. My worst car has been a Subaru, a car that's loved by many.
@ike @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim
@theRealKanuk @ike @jeffjarvis @lauren @captainslim I don’t think that my point was a tangent. Teslas were a novelty. One likely had to ignore the systemic problems with the models and the company because of their early entry in the market and the celebrity of the CEO. Now that competition is building and the CEO is seen as toxic, one may have a harder time defending a Tesla as a nice car.
