PLEASE BOOST: Within a day of raising awareness about Mastodon's funding, we've moved the needle on Patreon in a big way

Some Comparisons:

* Yesterday, Mastodon was receiving $21,000/month
* Today, it's receiving $28,000/month -- that's an increase of $7,000!
* Yesterday, 4,720 patrons were donating to Mastodon
* Today, 6,968 patrons are donating to Mastodon

Let's continue this work. Donate, and get the word out!

(Oh, and if you can, send your instance some bux too.)

SIDE NOTE: It's also worth noting that yesterday, when I sent my initial message, mastodon.social was straining under the load, so I used my back-up instance to get the word out about donating.

Well, now my back-up instance is straining under the load because my post ended up being spread everywhere -- to the point that I can't even see my notifications!

So I'm back to mastodon.social to get the word out 😆

Because the same concern trolls who were on the other thread are bound to come here:

1. Donating to your local instance is good 👍
2. Donating to your Mastodon helps your local instance if it runs Mastodon since those code updates end up on your instance
3. Yes, other projects exist -- I've already sent out requests for funding for them (just ask @dansup)
4. Yes, Mastodon is FOSS, but there's a cost and donating is a better way to help with it

Also: if for whatever reason you don't like Patreon, you can also donate via Open Collective: https://opencollective.com/mastodon

Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server based on ActivityPub

@atomicpoet
Does this go to your individual instance or mastodon as a whole?
@atomicpoet looks like payments are in $ only, not € 😞
@atomicpoet @dansup what’s the best place to donate? Local instance or mastodon?
@thori @dansup Why not both?
@atomicpoet @thori @dansup Why not both? I’ve looked and looked and am unable to find a way to donate to a local instance.
@NotPOTUS34 Not all servers are set up to accept donations.
If you can work out who your admin is, ask them...
@NotPOTUS34 A fair few servers have a how to donate guide under the about button.
One tip: larger donations less often mean lower fees.
@BenAveling Thanks. That’s a good point abut the fees. I’ve noticed lately that some charities to which I make donations allow the payer to cover the credit card company fee. Example, one enters $50 and the website asks if one will be willing to pay $52.78 or something similar.
@atomicpoet just checked > your pleroma instance is going the 502 route at the moment > heavy load indeed
@atomicpoet I donated to my local instance. Is that the same thing?
@KLB That's different. I'm raising awareness on the Mastodon project, which also benefits your local instance (if it runs Mastodon). See the rest of the thread.

Amazing effort from you all 👍

@atomicpoet

@atomicpoet help me understand why Gold and Platinum level are "Sold Out" if you can. Before I commit to support at a lower level I want to make sure I'm not missing something.
@wonderwomancode I don't know. None of this money goes to me. I'm just helping Mastodon out.
The perk provided by those tiers was having your logo on the site. Limited page space, so limited tier slots it seems.
@atomicpoet For a newbie here could you explain, how does this all work - so much to learn ( or point me to a previous post 🙏)
@EllzSummary Don't know what you're trying to learn. I'm just trying to raise awareness about a cause.
@atomicpoet I have signed up as a sponsor. Just $10 monthly for now through Patreon.
Yes! Supporting your friendly neighbourhood instance administration is way more personal and satisfying than feeding ad revenue machines. Keep 'em going!
@vint But how is that done?
@NotPOTUS34 donations. Not a reliable source of income, but it may work out if instance admin provides people the options in accessible manner.
@vint I get that one can donate to an instance. I can find I mechanism to accomplish that.
@atomicpoet I expect there to be more when the larger corps move off of that site over to where the users are here.
@atomicpoet Done! Go get ‘em mastodonians!
@atomicpoet Thanks for raising this awareness. Due to that message, I donated to Mastodon and mas.to yesterday.

@atomicpoet Interesting, that the funding model reminds me of NPR. Where a part of the audience contribute, so that everyone can have access to quality journalism.

It is a method that has been proven to work, so I think this may well be the next big thing in interactive quality content

@atomicpoet
done, annual DD and happy to do it .
@atomicpoet Reminder: larger donations less often mean more bang for your buck: less of your donation goes to fees and charges
@atomicpoet Is it recommended to donate to your local instance and Mastodon HQ?
@cgervasi Yes,but you should find out how your local instance acquires funding. Not all of them are run by volunteers. Some are run by companies. See: https://mastodon.social/@atomicpoet/109400148388785814

@atomicpoet imagine a federated transparent revenue sharing system.

I wonder how that could be done.

@atomicpoet Right now, what I can give is going to my instance Fosstodon.org, but next time I can add to my Patreon budget, I'll give to the project as a whole.

@atomicpoet

donating to people's individual instance is what they should do BEFORE donating to Mastodon, which is doing fine. there kinda needs to be a healthy and sustainable network of servers here for the whole thing to function. it's not like the software does anything on its own.

@jackdaw_ruiz Not everyone's instance is run by volunteers. In facts, some of the biggest instances are for-profit ventures.

So no, not everyone should donate to their instance.

@atomicpoet

Wow are there sometimes exceptions to generalized statements wow.

I've taken what you said under consideration. In light of those details, people should still prioritize their instances. But your input is appreciated!

@jackdaw_ruiz I mean, consider all these for-profit instances:

mastodon.cloud
mstdn.jp
twit.social
cloudisland.nz
vivaldi.social

These are well known instances too!
