England, oh England. Sad outcome. Minute fractional part of myself is almost glad that I won’t have to go through anything like that again for a while. But the rest of me of course in a deep state of off-pissedness. Bah. Grrr. Poo. Bother. Damn. #worldcup
@stephenfry
Penalty PTSD... Poor Harry Kane..
@stephenfry Knowing they were playing a superior team, they should've worn the armband, and to hell with punishment. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@stephenfry
I assume you are talking about nurses's pay, opening new coal mines, pouring shit in rivers or something else that actually matters.
@tomstoneham @stephenfry is Stephen only allowed to talk about things given a certain amount of importance? Who decides the ranking? 😂
@tomstoneham @stephenfry Unless you are a pregnancy test, take your negativity elsewhere, Tom. That was just plain rude.
@stephenfry yeah it was quite painful tobwatch from between my fingers!
@stephenfry
I recommend the Norwegian way. Just don't qualify. Saves a lot of trouble and pain.
@stephenfry
Never mind, set your alarm for the third day at Multan! #PakvEng
@stephenfry We did better than most of us expected, I think. Quite proud of the effort and, actually high, skill level that England showed, through much of the tournament. Gutted to lose, but we played well, and no shame to lose to the reigning champions.
@stephenfry At least we can now fully support Morocco without feeling conflicted… They have been a joy to watch.
@stephenfry perennially frustrating. Although France are the World Champions and man for man probably the best team in the tournament so it was always going to be a close one wasn’t it.
@stephenfry thanks for confirming that I made the correct decision in continuing to watch Dark instead.
@FakePlasticDunk @stephenfry ooh, #Dark, now there’s a show! Have you watched #1899 yet? It’s very good and quite different to Dark.
@JovialJooles @stephenfry ah, not yet, it was a choice between watching the new thing (1899) or the older thing that I'd been multiply recommended (Dark), so I went with the latter first. But your enthusiasm is noted, making it more likely that 1899 will be watched later!

@stephenfry I'm assuming this is football related which means it's not relevant to me but in any situation like this Captain Darling is my mentor.

Made a note in my diary on the way here. Simply says: "Bugger".

@stephenfry In the stands Beckham was hiding his eyes and I thought, “Well, this is a different steelier English squad than in his day.” As it happens, they are not.

@stephenfry
Have no fear.

Off-pissedness is a normal part of aging.

It is On-pissedness that should be of concern.

Especially when barefoot.

@stephenfry

So are you saying that this Deep State makes you angry?

@stephenfry Although I know nothing about football, I had a sneaky suspicion that we’d come up short. I would have placed a bet on that score line too but patriotic shame overcame me. ☹️
@stephenfry I stay completely away from the World Cup this time, yet I wished England success as usual. Teams I root for never win anything - let’s see what happens to Argentina next… x
@stephenfry and better - more courageous and more sporting - than it going to penalties.
@stephenfry just play World Cup Willie on a loop you silly old codger

@stephenfry tough result, but they should be proud. Overall a good tournament.
@stephenfry
I wouldn't mind, but we are a better team than France 😕
@stephenfry yes. Can't help thinking that England go into every game that's against anyone better than say... Surinam... with the attitude of extreme negativity. All this ponderous passing around between centre-backs gets us nowhere, and we pay the price (eventually).
@stephenfry Best quality football of the tournament I thought. Good game. We played well and could have won on another day. With a different ref. Felt sorry for Kane even though he is spurs player!!
@stephenfry thoughts and prayers, baguettes and cold stares 🥖

@stephenfry

I don't bother with watching sport. My interests are hillwalking, running circuit training and so on.
I note some people in this thread with a Scottish flag in their title want to rejoice in the defeat of England / France.
Grow up.
Let's not Twitter here.
We came here to be better.
If it's not right for you, leave.

@stephenfry I have no idea what you’re talking about.
@stephenfry better to have been in the fight and lose rather than not be there at all (like us).
@stephenfry, as a Brazilian I fully understand. What I can say is, at least be glad that France didn't score 7 goals on England (2014 still hurts).
@stephenfry
Now you can join the rest of us and root for Morocco! 😀
@stephenfry Gloating is uncivilised, but take some comfort in knowing that one man's poo and bother is another man's hourra!
@stephenfry saving it for USA/Mexico/Canada 26
@stephenfry Good game.. Kanes miss not his normal.. and few other misses..
@stephenfry I had been repeatedly assured it was coming home. Is that no longer the case?
@stephenfry England haven’t won the World Cup since 1966 56 years ago glad I don’t watch the football now because it just seems a bit out of line because normally the World Cup would be in the summer but due to Qatar being in very hot in summer. They’ve had to move it to round now because it isn’t too hot there at the moment. But right now I’m snuggled up in bed.
@stephenfry The Women’s World Cup is next year in Australia; you’ve got about 10 months to prepare.
@stephenfry
I know, I know it's not the same, but at least Norwich has won against Swansea yesterday.
( Unfortunately, my bet was on Swansea, but never mind...)
@stephenfry
But France [coloniser] v Morocco (colonised) is so redolent. Bad luck England - 1966 retreats further into the mythic past.
And go Morocco; as an Australian I love a win by the colonial upstart.
@stephenfry Commiserations. I suppose sending a gunboat (or two) to Calais is definitely out of the question?
@stephenfry dear Stephen Fry, I watched Last Chance to See and learned a lot. As a thank you, I’m going to show sth utterly extraordinary. Look at photo. As you know, one of the sharpest calendars belongs to Iranians. This is their very first dating back to Mithraism.The shadow on the mountain appears on the very first day of the month at noon and changes shape based on the meaning of the month.The following shadow in the photo represents Mithra himself because the month is named after him since
@stephenfry Maybe time to reflect that the women did a better job than the men
@stephenfry same. I haven’t been able to really invest in the world cup this year. Bought and paid for. Such a shame sport isn’t “sport” anymore. That said, I couldn’t resist a peek now and again at the tv, only to see Harry launch the ball skywards. I then spent the rest of the night, not upset myself, just upset for Harry.
@stephenfry soccer is emotion, isn‘t it?
@stephenfry almost 4 decades later, and the English still talk about '66. By track record, what is the expectation here? Miracles?
@stephenfry it's not a proper world Cup though eh.
I'm happy we are in great shape for the real one, in summer, in a civilised host country.
