Did you know that when the tops of trees grow enough to touch over a street or sidewalk, that’s often nick-named a “kissing canopy?” It creates a beautiful, comfortable & cool street condition, but it ONLY happens when the right design decisions are made. Trees need to be prioritized, not thought about last. #StreetsAreBetterWithTrees #trees #cities #urbanism #KissingCanopies
@BrentToderian Love places like that, had no idea it had a name
@BrentToderian Hopefully, during the planning process, native trees are chosen. Makes all the difference between a thriving urban wildlife system and a pretty but sterile environment.
@BrentToderian kissing canopy & crown shyness: paradise-like?
@BrentToderian my modest contribution from 2009. Sallèles-d'Aude, France.
@BrentToderian Many of Edmonton's older residential neighbourhoods are like this. They've been able to keep their elm population healthy and its paid off with a beautiful urban canopy.
@BrentToderian It almost feels magical. This one I found in Berlin.
@BrentToderian @notjustbikes Trying to imagine the monstrosities required to make a kissing canopy over a stroad 😬

@BrentToderian They are some beautiful pictures and a great prompt about good design decisions. Thanks for posting!

I hope you don't mind if I gently encourage the use of alt text for your images for future toots, so those unable to see them can also appreciate your posts.

@BrentToderian this one is in Porto Alegre, Brazil
@BrentToderian in most narrower streets, I would be much happier to see the trees planted down the centreline, reducing the possibility of undermining foundations and reducing daylight to the adjacent houses. Also has the benefit of slowing down the cars!
@BrentToderian I love me a kissing canopy. I wish all streets had them
@BrentToderian Trees have largely been the victims of car crashes where I live. This is where a car either goes onto the sidewalk and takes out a tree or jumps the media and demolishes one- all scott free. So kissing canopies need to be bundled with camera enforced speed limits.
@BrentToderian Does it mean" Tree tunnels "(love them so much) are infact kissing canopies 😱?
@BrentToderian just marvelous! I particularly like the Jacaranda scene. Reminds me of a street in my hometown of Fullerton
