Wait until all the right-wing activists trying to ban books from school libraries to protect children from "inappropriate" content find out about the internet
@juddlegum seriously, their kids need to get on Instagram, NOT
@juddlegum THANK YOU! This is what I’ve been saying—and, as a college professor, how hard it is to GET a kid to read at all.
@juddlegum @laurajhmarshall Agreed. I teach writing as well. The best I can hope for is a quick read and write. I throw prompts at them every day. If it is interesting enough, they’ll read it and then write a few lines.

@juddlegum

It's all context dependent. On the internet they advocate for freedom of abuse... er, I mean freedom of speech.

@juddlegum In Canadian parliament right now there are discussions about adding age verification to certain sites like the UK did. I am surprised that hasn't appeared in the USA yet from religious politicians.

@juddlegum

There's a host of sites offering free book titles--particularly banned books--in .pdf formatting for PCs, Kindle and other e-readers.

The Brooklyn Public Library also offers to teens nationwide electronic library cards to check out banned books. https://tinyl.io/7U8R [I learned this evening this service is no longer available.]

These right-wing activists draw more attention to a title by protesting it, which makes a given book all the more interesting.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but BPL no longer offers library cards to anyone outside the state of New York. 🙁

@SharonGibson3 @juddlegum I'm sorry to say that's no longer the case regarding BPL. Looks like they stopped issuing out of state library cards as of July 15, 2022
@juddlegum Oh, the next thing on their agenda will be censoring the internet like they do in China and Russia.
@juddlegum This is so overblown. Just send the school a list of books you don’t want your children to read. Parental Rights aren’t just for Christi-fascists.

@juddlegum here in Oklahoma we have law makers with bills ready to put a movie/TV style rating system on books in school libraries.

@chrispeters @juddlegum kids will naturally want to read the books with the most restrictive ratings
@joyographic yep. I grew up evangelical. As soon as I left my parents house I began seeking out mature rated movies. But this isn’t about keeping kids from reading certain content it’s to make a system that allows bigots to target groups they hate.
@chrispeters My father forbade me to read just one book ("The Monkey Wrench Gang" by Edward Abbey). Of course I snuck it from the shelves and read it when he wasn't around, putting it back before he got home until I had finished it. Later I became an environmental activist...
@joyographic my dad didn’t read books. My mom kind of read the Bible and other Christian self help books. Therefore I didn’t read books outside of ones required in school. My first book I read front to back as a 19-20 year old was the Hobbit then LoTR.
