I've been thinking about one of my design projects recently. I haven't really worked on it for almost 9 months. I'm scared to know what state I left it in.

I haven't often come back to projects that I've shelved.

Do you revisit older projects and finish them?

@JunkFoodGames all the time. I've got one game that's just getting ready for release that's over 4 years old, and another I've been working on and off with for three. I think that's a healthy part of the process.

@FHGPaulLaPorte how do you fight that desire to always just work on that *new and shiny* idea? Asking for a friend*

*friend is me

@JunkFoodGames seriously though. I typically design in bursts. I'll work feverishly on a game for a few days, then stop and take a look at what I've got so far, test it out if I have enough there, then I don't force myself to go any further until I get hit with another burst.

Also, have you considered consolidating your "New and shiny" ideas into your "Old and dusty" games, if that's possible?

@FHGPaulLaPorte I think I do combine my old ideas with new ideas to some degree. Not always purposefully. A lot of my games do have some level of overlap in ideas, mechanics, design philosophy, etc

I also tend to design in bursts. Usually, when I lose that momentum, I'll move onto another project rather than pick back up an old one

@JunkFoodGames then honestly I wouldn't stress yourself with revisiting stuff if the inspiration isn't there. Even if you don't make a "product" out of an idea the stuff you learned in that initial creation process is going to be beneficial for the things you do drive all the way through.

This right here. ⬆️

I’m often reminded that the best of what we accomplish is from the failures of previous attempts.

Remember Google’s mythical “20% time?” It was to empower you to be more creative and innovative. Many of those projects went nowhere but from their failures came other successes.

The issue I have is it’s really “120% time” because of my day job! 🤣
