#UK folks, there's a petition to keep protection of transgender people in the equality act.

It's pretty scary being trans in this country at the moment, and we could use your help to protect our rights.

Feel free to share broadly/openly with others. Steal, boost, whatever. Let's get 100k signatures, please.

Petition: Commit to not amending the Equality Act's definition of sex

It has been reported that the Government may amend the Equality Act to "make it clear that sex means biological sex rather than gender." The Government has previously committed to not remove legal protections for trans people, an already marginalised group, but this change would do so.

@intentionaut Ty for sharing this! Signed!

I signed this ages ago. Sad to see so few signatures since May 😟

C'mon folks let's get this thing going ...

@intentionaut I support your campaign but can’t sign the petition as I’m not from the UK. Best wishes from Ireland

@caitrionaGalway @intentionaut

You just need a UK postcode, that is all. Google any city in England and copy the postcode from the first business you see, is my advice.

@CrypticMirror @caitrionaGalway @intentionaut
I'm fond of W11 1JA myself.
@dec23k @CrypticMirror @caitrionaGalway @intentionaut it kinda feels weird to cheat on something official like that... But then, gotta support my trans sibs!
@CrypticMirror @dec23k @MxAlba @intentionaut I could not fake a signature on a very serious document. Credibility is important.
@intentionaut signed and boosted 🏳️‍🌈
@intentionaut I’m so sorry you have to deal with this and I hope you have many, many #uk citizens who care and will sign on. #trans #lgbtq
@intentionaut
I support this 100% unfortunately I can't participate being from Canada so I'll repost in hopes it reaches others who can sign and move this Petition to the next level.
@intentionaut as an American, I can't believe countries like the US and UK are reversing on rights
@gavinisdie @intentionaut yup. I thought we were doing better 😢

@Harryshelper @gavinisdie Respectfully, your shock is a byproduct of the privilege you bring to the problem.

Black people and other activists have been shouting about rising militarism in the police as a symptom of a hard shift towards right-wing culture for a decade.

The attack on trans rights is just the lightning rod to facilitate unity across a disjointed movement.

@Harryshelper @gavinisdie There's at least a decade's worth of writing about this very thing happening, and increased historical looks at how fascism started last century by attacking queer rights and queer people in Berlin.

How the Nazis destroyed the first gay rights movement

The 1920s and early ‘30’s looked like the beginning of the end for centuries of gay intolerance. Then came fascism and the Nazis.

@intentionaut @gavinisdie sorry, I think you may have misunderstood. I wasn't talking about now, as in the very recent past. I meant over the last few decades. I have been stopped in a car to check my black son hadn't car jacked me which I know would not have happened if he was white. It's clearly something getting worse, and that's terrifying.
I do understand what you meant. I wish I had the answers. And yes, I myself have a lot of privilege, fear for my kids isn't one of them.

@intentionaut

When citizens are a scared to be who they want to be because of their very own government, there is something very wrong.

The UK, the USA and Iran all have this in common. I know the conservative party in my country are proud to ensure those people are scared.

@intentionaut @WinstonSmith unfortunately I’m not British or I’d sign. This Shouldn’t even be a thing.
@intentionaut Thank you for sharing this. Very disappointing to see the UK head in the wrong direction when it comes to protecting trans rights. Please stay safe out there!
@intentionaut Signed. Gods I hate this government and the anti-trans lobby, and how far they've pushed their horrible agenda.
@intentionaut Boosting this because I can't sign it. UK friends! Please sign!
@intentionaut signed and boosted  👍
@intentionaut
Equally as scary here in the States.
@intentionaut signed! we need to fight for things like this

@intentionaut I think this petition misunderstands the law in the same way that Stonewall got in to hot water over recently? The human rights act does not cover gender identity, and Stonewall were found to have been giving illegal advice to public bodies based on what they wanted the law to mean rather than what it actually said.

Note: This is not a comment on the appropriateness of the law, or whether I agree or disagree with it. Just on its legally accepted meaning.

@mgladdish oh interesting. thanks. i’ll double check.

@intentionaut Here's a link to the report by Akua Reindorf into the recent controversy at Essex University. Note recommendation 18 where the protected characteristics are laid out clearly. And recommendation 28 makes particularly uncomfortable reading for Stonewall and their "interpretation" of the human rights act.

@mgladdish interesting and thanks for sharing. My understanding of Sunak’s plan it’s to amend and remove gender reassignment from the protected characteristics which would differentiate this from the GC right wing movement’s case against Stonewall substantially.
@intentionaut Ah, interesting. That's quite different to what this petition is about, though?

@mgladdish

Currently, the Act protects trans people from discrimination on the basis of both sex and “gender reassignment”, regardless of whether they have undergone medical transition or hold a Gender Recognition Certificate. It allows trans people to access certain protected spaces equally.

Proposed change would explicitly remove those protections and limit trans access to spaces such as such as DV shelters, bathrooms and hospital wards. #Trans

@intentionaut In which case I think you need a different petition. The one linked doesn't address this.
@intentionaut mgladdish is lying to you, Stonewall weren't found to be giving "illegal advice" at all. Their interpretation of the Equality Act was upheld in court.

I signed. Another 198 signatures to go until 10,000. I hope this will attract much more support.
