The incoming GOP majority is going to try and discredit the work of the Jan. 6 Committee. Remember the courage of honorable conservatives like Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger when the extremists begin their assault. They had nothing to gain by opposing their party and Trump, and everything to lose. But they stood up anyway for the rule of law and for democracy.
@georgetakei
Liz Chaney is vociferously anti-LGBTQ+. She doesn't get a pass because she isn't as much of a fascist as the rest of the party.
@graygoogirl @georgetakei you are responding to a gay man, he knows her stand on this issue. She stood up for what was right when she knew it would cost her her seat. So build a bridge and get over it.
@firewyre
Lol, cishet mansplaining who George Takei is to a gay transgender Star Trek fan is hilarious. Chaney doesn't get a pass for doing her job and you apologists can kiss the fattest part of my ass. Now GTFO.
@georgetakei
@[email protected]
This dipshit by the way doesn't understand that George Takei being gay only adds to he hypocrisy of promoting Chaney. It was the entire reason I posted. George, you should know better than I salute someone who sees you as the lesser.
@georgetakei

@graygoogirl @georgetakei A little respect please. This isn't Twitter.

:)

@RobHadley @georgetakei I do not intent to show anyone respect who wouldn't show me the same. His response of belittling my intelligence while outright dismissing my position without providing a suitable counter argument was not respectful. His commentary after the fact about me was not respectful.
@graygoogirl @georgetakei I would appreciate if you use a more normal tone. From your reaction I get the feeling that you need to divide the world, if not anyone, in good or bad. Don’t you feel that people typical not are either good or bad?
@Zonje @georgetakei The fact that you wish to tone police me rather than internalize that a reply guy decided to dismiss my point out of hand while simultaneously talking down to me, says everything I need to know about you. The world does in fact have objective morality, and good people being complicit with the actions of bad people, says a lot about them. The policies that Chaney favors are designed to maximize harm to queer folk in line with her religious beliefs.
@graygoogirl Um, this ain't your thread. You don't get to tell someone else to GTFO. #arrogant

Hi! I'm a cis-gendered mansplainer! I know you don't care about my worthless opinion, but I think encouraging GOP Reps and Senators (whether or not ALL their policies are in line with yours/ours) to at least defend the principles of US democracy is a good thing. I know it's ridiculous that the bar is this low, but I feel we can only build with what we HAVE. Not what we want. Let's hope more GOPers see past the identity politics
@Vincoza @graygoogirl Hear, hear. Such strict identitarianism doesn't solve anything; it's just divisive. It's also a cheap mental shortcut that is the opposite of thoughtfulness.
@graygoogirl @firewyre @georgetakei Your hostile tone won’t gain you any supporters.
@ZZiggy @[email protected] @georgetakei Oh no, I won't get a bunch of fence-sitters who will whinge when it comes to supporting LGBTQ+ rights, whatever will I do?!
@graygoogirl @firewyre @georgetakei
Did I click my heels too many times? Am I back on Twitter?

@firewyre @[email protected] @georgetakei

That is one really angry individual. We all have our axes to grind, but you'd think the Twittwr debacle would teach us that just pulling out the hatchet and slaughtering all nay sayers isn't the best way to build community. Some people don't get that we sometimes just need to pull together instead of scream hysterically and wonder why everyone is stepping g away from us.

I sincerely hope that we - and I mean the LGBTQ community - can learn not to self harm.

@graygoogirl @georgetakei who’s trying to give her a pass on lgbtq issues ?

The topic here is the GOP — likely Jim Jordan — leading an investigation into the Jan. 6 Committee. Any thoughts about that?

@inklings
Not really. We know any of the stuff coming out of this next House are going to be partisan hackjobs designed to erode democracy, we should fight that as hard as we can. We can in fact do that without propping up a queerphobic ass as the normalcy the GOP should aspire to get back to. Solid ethics around democracy are great, she still doesn't deserve a pass on all the other wretched things she stands for.
@georgetakei

@graygoogirl @georgetakei
So you have zero to say about attacking the Jan. 6 committee — established to investigate trump’s armed insurrection against congress. Gotcha.

Bye 👋🏻

@graygoogirl You just tore into the people who were trying, over an unrelated topic. I think you need to shut up and go figure out what your problem is.
Rep. Liz Cheney votes in favor of same-sex marriage protections

Cheney and 46 other House Republicans voted Tuesday in favor of legislation that protects marriage equality. Cheney publicly changed her stance on the issue last year after previously opposing same-sex

Casper Star-Tribune Online
@graygoogirl @georgetakei Let's not conflate defending the US Constitution and laws with gender identity and/or sexual preferences. Apple to oranges. Separate discussion at a different time.
@KAW
Nah. I'm not going to operate in a vacuum. She doesn't deserve the praise people heap on her for doing the absolute bare minimum. And ther isn't anything being conflated. She is both good on the sole issue of "insurrection is bad" and is otherwise a terrible human on literally anything else politically.
@georgetakei
@graygoogirl @georgetakei
You seem a bit hostile. Obama spoke against same-sex marriage at one point when campaigning for his first term. Liz had spoke against it previously but she also voted for codifying it this week. Though no one is perfect, reinforcing positive behavior and actions is always better then saying nothing. It will illicit better behavior in the future. Takeisama did not praise her as an advocate or anything else. It was metered.
@graygoogirl @georgetakei I thought she changed her mind on that...
@toxtethogrady
She voted for one piece of legislation that also included codification of interracial marriage. Otherwise her messaging has been identical since day one.
@georgetakei
@graygoogirl @georgetakei At the end of the day, she's a doctrinaire conservative. She's also taken some heat for trying to keep the J6 report focused entirely on Trump while downplaying how other conservatives aided and abetted Trump. It's important to keep the distinction between those who are conservative (Cheney) and those who are corrupt (Aileen Cannon)...
@toxtethogrady
I don't believe that distinction matters. A person who cares for democracy over fascism but still sees people like myself as the lesser is not worthy of my respect. She shouldn't get a gold star for doing the bare minimum expected of politicians in a democratic society.
@georgetakei
@graygoogirl @georgetakei Remember that a large fraction of Americans are willing to do far less. Some even fly their contempt for democracy from their pickup trucks...
@toxtethogrady @georgetakei Her positions don't get more acceptable because the overton window has shifted further right.

@graygoogirl @georgetakei

Watching two dinosaurs duke it out is entertaining. The winner will be so depleted it will be easier to take care of them after they're exhausted.

@georgetakei Unfortunately, for most of the GOP, it’s not about right and wrong. It’s about power.
@georgetakei You make me self study American politics.
@georgetakei I hope people invest in audio recorders for the treasonous, backdoor chats.
@georgetakei well@said George, let’s hope they see the wood for the trees?
@georgetakei i.e., they did their jobs - I've always felt conflicted about congratulating politicians for doing the bare minimum
@jvmname @georgetakei Here we are. Having to choose the moderately fit, because they are normal, to avoid having complete unhinged people being elected.
@jvmname @georgetakei
This right here. I am glad they participated so fully. Wouldn't it be great if we could count on that all the time? Not having the GOP clown show of distractions made it seem so incredible when, in reality, this should be the feel of EVERY hearing.
@jvmname @georgetakei when it seems so common for them to do otherwise, it’s good to offer positive reinforcement for correct behavior. Psychology 101.
@jvmname @georgetakei The bar is demonstrably low.
@jvmname @georgetakei if we can do it for kindergarten graduates, we can do it for politicians... I would argue the latter needs their mediocrity acknowledged more, since passing kindergarten is far more common than a politician doing their actual job.
@georgetakei Well said. Hoping to see those two again in '24!
@georgetakei Jan 6 committee is going to publish them. Let’s hope people read them. Probably need to make a Jan 6 movie to get it out to the general public. Geeze
@georgetakei No, I am sorry, but I cannot support them.
@georgetakei At present they are attempting to create a committee to argue that #jan6 was not an insurrection. My question is don’t you need some evidence to point to that? They’ve already ask for the other committees discovery. Guess they’re not willing to do their own leg work.
@georgetakei +1 ... it would be nice to be able to vote for an R again someday
@nygeek @georgetakei when R return to pre Reagan sensibilities maybe it could happen. But with this road they’ve taken toward fascism their name might already be forever tainted. They are in my book.
@krnlkule @georgetakei I am afraid you may be right. Their future may best be that of the Whigs.
@georgetakei Benghazi hearings 2.0 and they'll end the same way: the Republicans will have to admit the committee did nothing wrong and their findings were correct. Then they'll waste more money on another round of hearings because that's unacceptable to them and round and round toilet bowl the tax dollars go.
@georgetakei Because today's GOP likes to think, act and speak so much in terms of black or white.

@georgetakei I wouldn’t say discredit. They will do their best to ignore it, kill it, or turn it around with lies for their benefit.

I remember them both because, concentrating on this specific issue, they were on the right side of history.

@georgetakei I hope the GOP realizes that a lot of the districts that did well were the ones that didn’t have candidates that were trying to support the insurrection and conspiracy theories. The districts doing well were the ones with Republicans who actually focused on the local issues. (The NYT had an interesting bit about it in their daily newsletter a couple weeks ago)
@WildWildEyes @georgetakei They realized and then just as quickly forgot.
@georgetakei @Laces When will they learn? 😭😭😭
@WildWildEyes @georgetakei Never. Even when they distance themselves from him, they'll just pretend like they never supported him. It's the consequence free GQP!
@georgetakei true, but let's also not forget they are themselves possessing pretty horrible beliefs, they just dislike 🍊🤡 even more.

@georgetakei

They did the right thing, and I’m grateful, but it’s such a low bar for them. She and Kinzinger don’t believe in the same democracy we believe in. Where everyone has a voice, and a vote. Where every culture and faith (or no faith) has the same acceptance. We need them, but they will not bring the future we hope for.

@georgetakei the person who as far as I can see really deserves a medal is Mike Pence. I probably don’t agree with him on much, but his failure to play his role in the coup may have stopped it from going further. (I still think it would have failed but it would have been far uglier.) There’s a reason they were chanting hang Mike Pence. It’s because he betrayed them in their view.
@georgetakei getting ready for my nothingburger with wall-flavored ketchup.
