@Chiaroscuro I howl at my husky and he howls back. If we're outside, the 7-8 huskies in the neighborhood all join the chorus. It lasts a minute or two and it's wonderful.
If you visit my place, you can howl as my husky as much as you want. We love it.

And also I think that you are right in the sense that we as a humans are improving the conditions at the zoo. But still there is no reason to have an animal in jail.

I find it delightful when a chihuahua or rat terrier howls as best the can

It's just adorable watching a sweet little dog find his inner wolf
It can really freak out the owners too
In the wild, while North America wolves are mostly harmless, aside from disrupting their communication, it seems foolhardy to alert them to where they can find free beef jerky and gorp
