@char Keeping the species continuing through breeding programs and educating visitors, I'd imagine.
(There's some moral discussion about zoos to be had, but I think we're getting overall better about good environments for animals. As signs like this show!)

This is exactly the purpose and existence of a Nature reserve.

Thanks to the person that created this sign, no doubt.
And also I think that you are right in the sense that we as a humans are improving the conditions at the zoo. But still there is no reason to have an animal in jail.
