Khashoggi’s Ghost

CNN was legitimate news for decades. Then TFG called them "fake news" and right-wingers shunned them. So to appear "balanced" they started inviting liars on. Anchors were told not to correct the lies because then the liars wouldn't come on.

Now CNN invites liars on and lets them lie unchallenged, and leaves the lies uncorrected, all in an attempt to appease the party that depends on lying.

So now CNN is the literal definition of "fake news" and should be treated as such.

Lies are not news.

That's exactly what happened to the so-called "Liberal Press"... they were beaten down by right wing claims of "liberal media bias" and then went into both sides mode... and have stayed there... now rightwing and far rightwing media far out number the "legit press"..

Yup. Eric Alterman calls this "conservatives working the refs" to get more favorable calls and pull the center line in the ideological tug of war to the right to make it easier for them to win. Karl Rove in 2000 referred to "controlling the narrative." Journalists need much better bullshit detectors and the stomach to act on them.

@UROCKlive1 They actually started their decline after Ted Turner sold his share in the company. When he started CNN it was all the sensationalist headlines (but still news, just BIG EXPLOSION kind of lead-in to the newscast).

There's a famous clip of Jon Stewart talking shit to tucker carlson on Crossfire, which was a CNN production at the time, saying "You guys are the news you should be doing news stuff" or something like that.

@UROCKlive1 do you truly believe that? William Hearst, who was amongst the founders of the America First Committee, sabotaged objective journalism by introducing yellow journalism. CNN destroyed integrity by destroying all regulatory oversight and creating privatization of “cable” news networks. FCC was no longer allowed to regulate private companies and disinfo became a new norm. So, please don’t confuse good journalism with “privatized” sensationalism garbage.

@UROCKlive1 Looking at it in a big picture perspective, I'm seeing something very worrisome in the entire journalism network.

It feels like the polluting of the media is being done intentionally to weaken it... slowly, so it's not apparent.

Like washing clothes with too much bleach. Threads weaken over time and start to fray until they're just rags, but you notice nothing different at first.

What worries me more, is who might be behind it.

@mfreeman They were informed a few months ago about the new rules: No calling out Republicans when they lie on air, no criticizing Fox, and must be critical of Biden. A couple that didn't do it immediately were fired. Others were warned that their jobs were on the line. Most changed their tune quickly.

Also they have to fire people because their ratings have crashed and they're not making money. It's a mess over there.

Even worse than their mainstreaming of partisan right wing propaganda is their adoption of the FoxNews terror around every corner narrative.

I've got a senior friend who hasn't yet bought into the conservative narrative but is ingesting the constant fear of imminent whatever crisis of the hour that can only be assuaged by watching even more CNN.

They are now living in a world of constant sensory shock. I can't go over there and take more than a few moments of its sturm und drang.
