Okay, #knitting people. I have a lovely, buttery soft baby alpaca yarn that doesn't work for the pattern I intended. Send me shawl ideas! 1020 yards, worsted weight, charcoal gray, little stitch definition. I'd like to use most of it. Yes, I have looked for ideas on Rav.

Here it is in kind of a broken rib.

I'm having so much angst about settling on a project for this yarn that I've started dreaming about it, which is simultaneously hilarious and my sign to put it away for a while. #knitting
@aleen i HATE anxiety dreams! >.<
@nothe especially over something so low-key. Calm down, brain, it's fine.
@aleen hahaha, i can get anxious over ANYTHING, yo ;)
@nothe meee too, especially since I'm off of my anxiety med :-/

I've figured out what to do with the alpaca yarn! #knitting

Pattern (I can only find it on Ravelry): https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/vortex-shawl

I have no idea how big this is going to be. I think it's a blanket. #knitting
I just wanted to see how big it was after I got to the end of the second skein 😭 #knitting #SirSqueakertonTheFirst
@aleen looks like three full cats. Give up your reliance on arbitrary "inches" and "centimetres" and use a more concrete and reliable measuring system. *g*
@ginnikin he's on the small side, so maybe more like 2.5 cats πŸ€”

@aleen Pasties? 🀣

I had to zoom in because the holes looked like sequins and it reminded me of a beret my grandmother used to wear.

@aleen oooh that’s a cool pattern!
@aleen That’s a beautiful spiral - it’s going to be gorgeous in that soft black yarn.
@aleen maybe a cowl & hat instead?
@nothe mmmmaaaybe. I wanted to make something for me (my first selfish knit!) and I don't wear hats (too much hair) but I could always change my plan.
@aleen hah! cowl, mittens, earmuffs!
@aleen i hear ya on the hats, though, chopping all my hair off made hats so much more practical! :)
@nothe I don't know how long haired people wear them. I think they're so uncomfortable, and because my hair is thick and slippery they just kind of pop off.
@aleen really loose brims, or shoving all your hair inside, is about what i figure that said, baseball caps are amazing for keeping your glasses dry!

@aleen this. I've made Seraphina's shawl in everything from lace to super bulky https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/seraphinas-shawl

there's both a description and a pattern, and the repeat is ... I think six rows, but they're quite easy once one has figured it out (a in "do this pattern, the difference is what you do in the beginning and in the spine")

@melindrea it's lovely but I don't know how to crochet 😒

@aleen ... gods, I'm sorry.

I *totally* blanked on the fact that you said knitting, and only focused on the "shawl" part of it >.< (in my defense it was in the middle of the night).

@melindrea totally not a big deal :)
@aleen I'd say something with looser fabric - larger needles. A little bit of low-key lace. Something like this should work really well - might go up a needle size if necessary: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bough-2
Bough pattern by Janina Kallio

Bough echoes the quiet beauty of nature during its winter sleep. Inspired by the leaves falling down the trees and the bare branches bending in the wind, this shawl celebrates calm cosiness.

@aleen Something in garter stitch might be good, since stitch definition isn't easy to see. Here's a search of garter shawls:

I liked this scarf:

Good luck.

@aleen Easy as Pie is one of my go-to's for yarn that doesn't work for anything else. I think your yarn would be lovely in a simple openwork.

Easy as Pie pattern by Marisa Hernandez

Elegant and ethereal, this is a quick, relatively simple top-down triangular shawl that begins with the same four row pattern repeat until the edging. This is a great shawl for a beginning lace knitter, (or a more experienced lace knitter who wants something simple to knit that doesn’t involve a lot of concentration!)….Only the bottom edge is charted AND written. This can be extended for a slightly larger shawl by repeating the edge chart.

@aleen I wonder if it would show texture in something like this? https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/photography-shawl

@aleen if you have a little bit of contrast color ends, something like this? https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spathe-2
Spathe pattern by Isabell Kraemer

A simple but stylish shawl worked from one point of the triangle with gradual increases to form an asymmetric triangular shawl. Colorful leaf insets add interest and are a fun play with short rows.

@aleen something that gives it a bit of shape to keep it interesting? https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sherbet-fizz-shawl
Sherbet Fizz Shawl pattern by Ambah O'Brien

Sherbet Fizz is a confection of shawls that prove to be more-ish knitting. Choose between the small or large in fingering weight, DK or super chunky (SC) versions, and knit up a lightweight shawl that will be a delight to throw on for a touch of warmth on cooler days. Simple lace alternating with garter rows keeps it interesting and not too challenging β€” perfect for a first time lace knitter. Pair the pattern with some delicious yarn and you’ll be binding off in no time!

@Betty I don't think so. I can barely tell garter from stockinette. I think I might get another ball and make a really simple garter stitch hap with a stripe near the bottom, but it'll be so boring.
