The entire global landscape has been alteredโ€”paved, filled with parking and freewaysโ€”to accommodate the needs of 1.3 billion cars (rather than 8 billion humans).

This makes life very convenient for privileged minority with access to cars...and hell for everyone else.

Des Moines (215,000 residents) has 30 parking spaces per acre (4043 square meters), which is 20 times the residential density (1 household per acre). @straphanger The image reminds me of the capital of Brasil, Brasilia. The city is a complete from scratch conception, designed in the mindset that cars are our future. Whoever tried to walk from north to south by foot knows its not built for humans without cars.

@straphanger I-4 through downtown Orlando, I-4 and I-275 through Tampa. No matter how the roads are prettied up with landscaping and bridge/embankment design, they are destructive and divisive to their communities. And minority communities usually are the victims.

@straphanger I like this formulation, except it's not just distance and for that matter not just cars. The modern world is noisy and unhealthy and politically dysfunctional and doomed environmentally, all for profit which a few can use to escape those very same ills.
