Normalize Black people coming to this app being safe to speak their minds. What we bring up might abut internal discomfort and biases that you might hold. That is not the minoritized person’s responsibility, though, to educate you, coddle you, to do the work for you. It is your responsibility to not create yet another space where Black people are marginalized or silenced.
I’ve been calculated about bringing this up and now is the time.πŸ’–βœŠπŸ½

@ChaseTMAnderson Absolutely! No marginalizing or silencing those who are already marginalized in so many other places. Thank you for the reminder.
@DagmarE πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’– thank you for being open to listening πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

@ChaseTMAnderson Absolutely, Chase.

I commend James Baldwin's words on the topic.
In fact, I commend James Baldwin, full stop. A seminal writer for me.

@ukdamo thank you for sharing for people!
@ChaseTMAnderson @ukdamo Read all of James Baldwin’s work when I was in 7th grade. Young white girl part of desegregating the black High School to the mixed Jr High School. Major impact on my life. Read all that Maya Angelou had written by then, 1969.
Thankful for parents that allowed me to experience it all and read about everything I could, instead of trying to β€œprotect” me.
Grateful for the people I met and the lessons I learned. Am learning, teaching, and trying still.
@ChaseTMAnderson You are the second person to post a similar message so I say welcome. I hope others make you feel welcome as well.

@ChaseTMAnderson
Reminder:

The traditional function of racism in America is to allow wealthy Americans to control white Americans. It turns out people will endure a boot on their necks if you give them another neck to stand on.

Racists are self-hating white people spreading the means of their own enslavement.

Black liberation is white liberation.

@ChaseTMAnderson
Thanks for this. As a Canadian living in British Columbia, and a newcomer to this plaform, I welcome any comments to my page. I can’t promise to agree with everything but I may learn from any opinion.
@ChaseTMAnderson
By coming here and expressing their true self they help the rest of us to take those needed steps toward seeing them as we always should have anyway
@ChaseTMAnderson Exactly. We don't need white people chiming in.
@ChaseTMAnderson I don't ever take people speaking their mind about their cultural experience personally. Black people in the U.S. have experiences that I can only imagine. And I grew up in Ferguson!
@ChaseTMAnderson I'm black and I don't think it matters, what issues did you face that made you write this? I'm legitimately puzzled by this.
@ChaseTMAnderson
Just try not to self marginalize yourself. Already saw a couple of posts here that both try to defend the black while at the same attack the non-black, saying they don't know nothing and better shut up or somehting. So, I don't think that reverse-racisim is doing any good for anyone.
BUT if you are trying to pick fights by being passive-aggresive then I guess thats the way to go :D
@torbalan @ChaseTMAnderson Reverse racism is not a thing. Racism is about power, societal power. This is why institutional racism is such an important thing for us, as a society, to deal with, along with on the individual level. Black people, and other people of color, can have biases towards whites, they can even hate us, but it is NOT racism. I recommend this article as a great explainer on why it is not a thing, and where it came from. https://www.today.com/tmrw/what-reverse-racism-experts-weigh-term-t184580
What is reverse racism? Experts weigh in on the term

What does racism really mean and can it be reversed?

TODAY

@torbalan @ChaseTMAnderson

"Reverse-rasism" isn't a thing. In social sciences, racism = prejudice + power, and we whites are the most privileged and powerful demographic in the Western hemisphere. Therefore other demographics cannot be racist against us in this context.

@torbalan @ChaseTMAnderson

I agree with what you said. Racism is defined in a few ways in the dictionary, and pure prejudice is one of them. Whilst these arguments often get exploited by closet racists, I think it's important to see nuance and recognize that everyone, regardless of their skin colour, has the capacity to behave in a racist way.

@ChaseTMAnderson this may sound crazy, but I lived in such a rural area of WI I didn't see a #POC until I joined the Navy at 17. I was familiar with poverty, child abuse & many other negativities. My first roommate in the Navy was black. We talked a lot about the similarities of growing up. I can say honestly I have no bias and you should feel safe here. Honestly, you should feel safe everywhere. Write like you aren't marginalized. Write like you're not silenced. Be free to be you! Welcome πŸ”†

@KC_PersonalPolitics @ChaseTMAnderson

Unfortunately, there are many, many white people in the Fediverse who are your opposite: fragile and aggressive. Please help with responding to racist remarks, if they are going to listen to anyone, it will be to us fellow whites (just don't hold your breath).

@ronja I will call it out when I see it. I do already. I call out bias for LGBTQ as well. People have a right to be their authentic self. I'm neither a POC or LGBTQ, but the bias makes my blood boil.
@ChaseTMAnderson I think what bothers me the most, is that a post like yours is necessary in the first place. It sickens me that, here we are, in 2022, ad this kind of a post is even needed...much less thought of. To that end, every single social media page I have ever had, do have, or will have, is guaranteed a 100% safe zone for everyone! No exceptions!

@PengusKhan redirect that we don’t call people β€œblacks” and going to step away from how you’re already trying to engage. I hope you have a nice evening.

@ChaseTMAnderson

Well that's an interesting conversation starter. Looking forward to seeing you around.😊 πŸ‘€ 🍻

@ChaseTMAnderson thank you for posting. I will always speak up if I see racism and really hope this server won’t stand for that happening here. You are right about it it being your job. Absolutely
@ChaseTMAnderson I’m here to do the work! #allspacesequal

@ChaseTMAnderson I recently tried to reach out with love but instead was told to FO from another user. I am always willing to open my heart/mind and learn. I guess it's just a matter of learning how to do so without making the mistake of not realizing my questions/interest was not welcome at all.

All humans are beautiful and we should celebrate our unique traits instead of using them to tear each other down.

We Are ✊️✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 Stronger Together!

@AppalachianCrochet I’m sorry that happened and I’m glad you’ve reached out here. Hopefully we can all work together to build that kinder place πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–
@ChaseTMAnderson My door/heart is always open. You are the newest sparkle in my diamonds! Nothing but love!

@AppalachianCrochet @ChaseTMAnderson There are things to avoid when asking about someone’s racialized experience. First among them is not asking a person sharing their experience for unpaid teaching. It happens so very often that it’s just another inequal burden.

So to be sure, always check if they’ve invited questions first!

If not, leave them unquestioned, and ask Google or the like insteadβ€”there is a LOT of work already written that answers the common questions.

@robinshipton Thank you my dear. I am a well read person but I do think my interest in personal stories to give me perspective into their individual experience may be where I have missed the boat on being polite (without intention.)

I will take this and run with it for the future. Best wishes and lots of love!

@AppalachianCrochet Glad to help steer a fellow traveller! We are all always works in progress.
@robinshipton I am not perfect but it is my faults that make me unique and my acknowledgment of them offers expanding chance for continued education.
