When I was a tween I’d ask adults if there was some book that explained social situations and making friends etc. in a nice clear way like a math book. They laughed at this of course and said “you just pick up those things naturally!” It wasn’t until I mentioned this to a special ed teacher years later that I got a more supportive response (I didn’t still feel like I needed such a book but still wondered why it didn’t exist. Oh I figured the “social” things out and it WAS NOT natural.) #threads

“Being social in early 21st America: the definitive guide for the terminally distracted.”

Most aspects of successful social interactions are more logical and reasonable than you might expect given the general chaotic unpleasantness of most social situations. But, there are some expectations people will have, often unconsciously, that can lead them to dislike you for what seem like, on closer examination wholly arbitrary reasons.

Remember: if you get Wikipedia "pls give us money" begging, give to the Internet Archive instead.

The internet archive is perpetually underfunded, whereas Wikipedia has enough cash on hand to continue operating at twice its capacity for about 3 decades.

Editors strongly opposed the wording of the recent beg banner:

"you're just seeing racism everywhere"

in a society that has racism baked into its structure, racism IS everywhere and a lot of patterns and dynamics that wp don't notice or examine are racist. shouldn't be BIPOC to have to continuously point it out but wp won't do the work so

I recently found this picture, taken in the 1930s at Le Monocle, one of the lesbian nightclubs in Paris at the time.

It's a great picture, with a lot of different people, absorbed in their own merriment, and at the center, my new reference for the concept of badass.

I don't know who she is, but she deserves a long, adventurous backstory -- maybe involving mutiny aboard an airship, spies, and broken hearts.

She's the only one looking at the camera, so the story is definitely about her.

Not gonna lie, this report is impressive, and every Mastodon instance should publish something like this every month. I have an account on mstdn.ca, and this is the kind of thing that would encourage me to move my main account from mastodon.social to mstdn.ca (although I would still support Eugen’s Patreon for his work on Mastodon, which benefits all instances). Staying put for now, though.

State of the Instance - November 2022

Cliquez ici pour le français I'll start off with this: It's been one hell of a month for Mastodon Canada. Introduction The instance grew from less than 60 users to what is now 24 500 users in the span of just two weeks. It went from an experiment to a

Have an author client who's stuck on his novel, so I gave him a little #CharacterArc homework. (Based on #SaveTheCat by Blake Snyder.)

Might be fun to ask these questions about your characters.
