James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni "A Conversation". Full Broadcast Video (2

Giovanni: Love is a tremendous responsibility.
Baldwin: It's the only one to take. There isn't any other.

Very glad I finally made the time to watch this conversation in full
There's a lot about it that speaks to the era it was filmed (the perpetual smoking, for one 😅), but there's something hopeful about seeing elders who lived through a different time choosing hope and love. It makes me feel like I, too, can help build a better future
Especially in dark times like the ones we're in now, it's the kind of thing that's important to see, I think

"I can't believe what you say because I see what you do." ~ #JamesBaldwin

Maybe it's shallow hero-worship on my part, but I do like to read about really talented people recognizing the phenomenal talent of others. These are some lines from a poem James Baldwin wrote for Lena Horne, from one great artist to another:

the lady is the apple
of God's eye:
He's cool enough about it
but He tends to strut a little
when she passes by

the lady is a wonder
daughter of the thunder
smashing cages
legislating rages
with the voice of ages
singing us through.

The Blues Society released in 2023

In the segregated Memphis of the 1960s, blues masters and beatniks created a music festival that rocked the foundations of a conservative world.

"Love takes off the masks that we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within." -James Baldwin

This definition of love isn't about the infantile version of happiness, it is a state of grace, strength, and renewal. To see someone's flaws is to finally see the person.
