🧵 A spooky story for you.
I used to hike (& sometimes get lost) in a 970sq mile forest filled with wild boar, which are very dangerous. I once had an accident in there, snapped the tendons in my leg, and had to limp my way out in the dark. 6 weeks in a leg brace. But that's another story.

Odenwald is as #folkhorror as it gets. There are monastery ruins, ancient settlements & even a hidden 3rd Reich amphitheatre. Myths & legends abound about devils, ghosts, witches, and headless men...

On another hike, again when night fell before I had time to get out, I suddenly spotted a single column of mist drifting along the path toward me. I thought it was a person at 1st. It moved like one and came toward me at walking speed, went past & around me, and then disappeared on up the path. There was otherwise no mist. Such a strange experience. Not sure what kind of odd atmospheric condition that is.
Fortunately, I had the wherewithal to whip out my camera in time.

(all my photos)

@Richard_Littler I love that first photo in particular. Wonderful atmosphere.
@Richard_Littler spooky. Think that would unnerve me a little
@littleelse Oh, it definitely unnerved me too!
@Richard_Littler Beautiful and incredibly atmospheric photos… they look like stills from the opening battle from Gladiator

@Richard_Littler This is exactly the kind of forest I want to get lost in.

I long to have the piss scared out of me by the headless ghost of a 14th-century Cistercian monk in such idyllic surroundings

@Richard_Littler These photos are wonderful. So evocative (particularly when sitting somewhere safe and warm!)
@Richard_Littler are you near the sea? When I lived near Newcastle we’d sometimes get floating patches of mist called “sea fret”
@binaryape No, couldn't be further from the sea if I tried. I think the nearest sea is an 8-12 hour drive away.
@Richard_Littler
Mr Littler, as a mother, ( not yours, thank heavens) I need for you to wear a watch, be aware of the seasons, and get your bottom out of the woods before dark. That is all.
@Richard_Littler ggggggggghost!!!!! 😁👻
@Richard_Littler I once had a similar experience whilst hiking with my Mum in the South Downs. We walked onto Chanctonbury Ring (prehistoric hill fort). A thick mist started to descend and within a few minutes we could barely see each other. We made our way off as quickly as we could and as we were walking away, looked back and saw the mist lifting almost as quickly as it had descended. Sadly no photos, as we were too busy trying to get away. I later found out the area is reputed to be haunted.
@Richard_Littler Wow that amphitheatre is something.
@Richard_Littler Sounds like the basis for some good Doctor Who fan fiction. Reminds me just a tiny bit of that episode with Matt Smith (I think?) and Clara Oswald where they think there’s a ghost in the house and it turns out it’s an alternate dimension bleeding through.
@Richard_Littler I love these. Thank you for posting.
