Math Skills x Stage of Life

(Okay, I do a bit more than spreadsheets, but I still chuckled). Not sure who made this, but it's brilliant πŸ˜†

@Sheril I've always liked this graph. But stats belong in there somewhere. I definitely used min, max, avg, mΓ©dian, stedv, counta, functions a lot when I excelled.
@Sheril I’m not seeing anything Sheril πŸ’πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
@Sheril this feels so true πŸ˜‚
@Sheril Interesting πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜…!!
X -Axis has deliberatingly not scaled to save embarrassment to elderly people! I guess? πŸ€”πŸ˜œπŸ€£
@SKV @Sheril Apparently, math skills and analytical ability are among the things that IMPROVE with age
@Sheril ha! Except when I get those formulas to sing it's almost as gratifying as solving for x.
@JeffGeeBrown @Sheril I would say yes? Only I still know how to open Maple and use calculus in *there* when I need to, so it's not 100% downhill... ;)
@Sheril My most difficult maths problems that I have to solve on a daily basis are working out whether to use greater than, or greater than or equals, to avoid off by one errors in loop termination.

@Sheril

Isn't what they call methodological rigor really about 10 click problems. πŸ€”

@Sheril Funny because this is so true!
My graph is a little flatter than that... @Sheril
@Sheril Ouch too close to home. lol
@Sheril I would think it depends on what job you get, but for most of us, yeah, pretty on point.
@Sheril I realized I failed at any career goal I may have had based on how proficient I got at excel..... it is duct tape
@Sheril I'm out of uni and I guess I can still do some trigonom… trig… thing. The one with the sinuses. But I bet I can't do Excel πŸ’©
#electricalengineering
@Sheril @helix Excel has trig functions, you can do both!
@standev
Knowing Excel I think I rather use Octave. Or pen and paper.
@Sheril
@Sheril I fell off before Advanced Calculus, never reaching my full potential before falling off to spreadsheets πŸ˜†
@Sheril Most college professors when asked said high schools should teach stats and data analysis over algebra 2 and up, classes that were put in high schools because they needed human computers for the cold war effort. Those skills are taken over by digital computers now and are no longer to know in real life unless you are going to specifically be a math major..
@Sheril The equation at the top is still linear. Kids’ stuff.
@Sheril so so true 🀣
@Sheril It appears this excellent cartoon originated with Pearls of Raw Nerdism β€” http://pearlsofrawnerdism.com/

Where has my poor equation run off to?
@Sheril @StellaLunaObs This is the graph of my education and professional life!! Degree in Math from Clarkson University and 30+ years as a financial manager in education.

RE: Maths skills & Spreadsheets

I took an alternative course in life... thru Programming... and every time it lead to Spreadsheets... I swore I'd get even one day.

@StellaLunaObs @Sheril i mean spreadsheets can have a) equations and b) programming in it so some spreadsheets are pretty hardcore maths still
