On December 19, 2020 (the day the Jan6 riot was announced), Proud Boy Nicholas DeCarlo was on the phone with Gavin MacInnes.

The Nicholas Ochs sentencing memo describes a "Skull and Bones" chat with 12 people including Enrique Tarrio and Ethan Nordean.

In it on Jan 6, after Tarrio suggested they might attack again, someone told him to "text your boy Don jr and tell him to stfu."

@emptywheel There's a sentiment I think we can all get behind.
@emptywheel Pretty striking the degree to which Alito, Thomas, ACB, Boof, Gorsuch and Roberts are considered fellow travelers by the insurrectionist/Proud Boy crew.
@emptywheel
My mind keeps rewriting Ochs as Orcs. Seems fitting enough.
@emptywheel The jr.advise is welcomed
@emptywheel This. This is why I have missed reading your posts! Excellent reporting right here EW!!
@emptywheel Enrique Tarrio was doing lots of shenanigans with Eric and Don Jr in South Florida. I wonder if PBs are going to be working for DeSantis now as part of his own little army and dump the Trumps.

DeSantis Wants To Create His Own Little Army. How Worried Do We Need To Be?

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced this week that he wants to create a little vigilante army to operate under his control. I'm sure this is fine.

@emptywheel Production thoughts. Mastodon images for some reason overflow the boarder (at least in Chrome browser version), and this makes them impossible to read without expanding the image as illustrated below:

1/4 #USPol #twittermigration #mastodontips #mastodonmigration

@emptywheel It is kind of a pain, but this can be fixed by first pasting the clip into a paint program and giving the clip whitespace on the left and right. For example:

2/4 #USPol #twittermigration #mastodontips #mastodonmigration

@emptywheel On threading... Threading in Mastodon is actually pretty good. Every subsequent reply post by the author (you) is added to the top of the comments just below your last reply, making the thread very readable. If anyone selects the top post, what they see is all your posts first. It is kind of a natural thread. Once the thread is done, you can Boost top post (or Pin it) and it goes above the others in your profile timeline.

3/4 #twittermigration #mastodontips

@emptywheel Hashtags... If you put a #USPol or #USPolitics in every post then you may not need to use CWs. CWs make threads very hard to follow. People who follow @emptywheel generally know that politics are going to be discussed, so there is little point in hiding this content. If the #USPol is used, then users who what to filter it out can do so.

Anyway, hope these thoughts help. Thank you for what you do!

@emptywheel One final thing... It seems that if you try to edit a post to add an image, or maybe change the image, it does not federate the new image. So it is better to delete the post and redo it.
@rubicon @emptywheel but real conversations branch, which is why non-geeks understand tree format threading more easily in the "who's replying to who?" problem. Put it all in one long thread by timestamp is the easy *programming* solution, which is why tree structures are the very next thing you learn after arrays in a Data Structures class. My brain is burned, but I remember structures if not code.
@scotchfairy @emptywheel Sure they do. And the way that Mastodon threads posts, you can go down those branches. But if you start at the top you need to continue down to after the original poster's thread is completed. Then you can expand any post and see that thread. Check it out. EW's post thread is like the blue 1,2,3,4. Rubicon's reply thread is 3b,4b,5b,6b and you are 6c. This post would be 7d. Move around in it. It all works very well.

@rubicon it could be that I'm trying this in Chrome. And before you suggest a reader app, this works the best on my Android phone of what I've tried. At least behaviour is predictable.

Hover or rollover to show ALT text and tags doesn't work on ANY of the Android clients. And like almost all mobile clients, it could use a "Top" button. But it doesn't crash or lead me into "what now?" corners.

@rubicon This is just left right border? What if I just screen cap more widely?
@emptywheel You can do that, but you would need to grab about 20% whitespace on each side. Here is an example. Click on it to see the full image.
@emptywheel I know it is a super pain, but this is how it can be done in the paint program:

@emptywheel One more thing to know is that the entire stupid clipping thing can be disabled by the user.

Unfortunately clipping is the default setting, so the clipped text is what most users will see.

Attached: 1 image TIP OF THE DAY Change The Image Cropping Setting One thing about Mastodon that is pretty annoying is that by default embedded images are clipped at the edges. This can make it impossible to read text images without expanding the post. You can disable image cropping in your preferences under Post Layout, making it much easier to browse your feed. #twittermigration #mastodonmigration #NewUser #mastodontips #feditips @mastodonmigration

@emptywheel Their ability to like Don Jr. is directly proportional to how much use he is to them. The less useful the idiot, the less he's liked.
@emptywheel Love when the curtain is pulled back. Let there be light 👊
