‘Opening the gates of hell’: Musk says he will revive banned accounts

A Twitter poll posted by Elon Musk shows 72 percent support granting “general amnesty” to accounts suspended for harassment, abuse and misinformation.

The Washington Post
@taylorlorenz @esqueer we can argue all day about how bad it is that this is possible, though :/
@Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer I don’t mind that they moderate their own app stores. I think that’s reasonable; the problem is on iOS, where side loading isn’t a thing and it’s App Store or bust for 99% of the user base.

@brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer so now Twitter's content moderation policy is actually set by Apple?

Lol.

@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer no, it means most companies have the ability to choose what they do and don’t want to platform. Lol.

@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer

you take place in my car on my policy. No Nazis allowed in my car.

@MorningDew @rant @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer Bingo. Apple and Google shouldn’t be forced to use their marketplace to host or promote a social network that caters to nazis.

@brianhough @MorningDew @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer did I somehow stutter, everyone is responding with the obvious?

I was merely saying that if Twitter abandons its own moderation then it will have to adapt to Apple's content policies ergo Apple sets Twitter's content moderation policy.

I wasn't commenting on whether this is good or bad just implying that Twitter will be unwilling to lose access to iOS devices.

@rant @MorningDew @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer yes, you were unclear in your intent. Thank you for clarifying.

@brianhough @MorningDew @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer Glad that's cleared up!

I was genuinely amused by this revelation. I hadn't considered that Google & Apple would serve as a backstop to the Musk's "free speech" pandemonium but it seems obvious in hindsight.

Twitter could not survive without being in those stores.

@rant @brianhough @MorningDew @taylorlorenz @esqueer @Rairii Twitter will always have the browser. I wish all these crappy hot takes would emphasize that being relegated to a web app is NOT losing access to IOS devices.

@kynyc It'll be less than ideal, people's preference for native apps is a given but with browser notifications and a dedicated effort to make it highly functional.

You're absolutely right, thanks for the correction.

@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer

I mean not really but also kinda?

But why are we shocked when nobody/no entity wants to be liable or responsible for user generated content that has no (or unreasonably) few consequences or responsibilities?

Why should they develop the tech/marketplace and whatever credibility/trust with their users only to have some brat tweet abusive garbage? Who’s surprised here and why?

@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer Platforming Nazis is bad. And bad for business.

@smashcutt yep. But you know what scares me more than unabashed Nazis who are so blatantly obvious and sometimes just trolling for attention.

Alex Jones and his type. Con man liars scare me far more than the pathetic movement of unabashed Nazis.

Put another way, I don't want to hear Nazi propaganda but if your forthright in your bigotry then we can intervene.

The liars and manipulators. The purveyors of misinformation. They are a far greater danger, they claim innocence while doing evil.

@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer if you have apple that authority, they would just ban twitter and reddit for allowing NSFW content. putting apple at the head of conent moderation is bad. also apple isnt exactly non consertive eaither, it blocked queer content when using parental controls at one point
@skymtf Oh, don't I know it. One of my lesser but still considered reasons for not having an iphone is having to commit to their worldview on what is and isn't acceptable.
@rant it's like centeralized social media was a mistake and centralized appstores were a mistake.
@rant also I doubt this will happen given Truth Social and Parlor are both on the appstore. Generally It is always conflicting cause like while I do think some of these sites need to crash and burn, the idea of having corprate gate keepers to censor what they don't like online is a liberal view, and not a leftist one, like I also do worry given mastodon is not immune to the appstore, it one of the few points users cannot directly control
@rant I considered switching to android, but kept running into the issue where sandboxing is not exactly great, and apps like Facebook user lesser documented functions to listen to microphone and camera, or look at background apps even if you do not grant permissions for it
@rant even Google has admitted to using accsesablity functions on android to look at things users did not give it permissions for
@rant iOS is more limited, but also lacks these random apis that make this possible meaning that when I say no it really does mean no to these apps
@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer in reality without sideloading giving apple keys to content moderation would just result in porn being banned. Really should consult with sex workers like ashley lake who is all too familiar with apples anti porn polices.
@skymtf @rant @brianhough @taylorlorenz @esqueer didn't porn get banned on tumblr because apple told them to under threat of app removal?
@Rairii @rant @brianhough @taylorlorenz @esqueer apple did remove it until it banned porn, but only after the media dropped a moral panic article on Tunlvr, let’s just say Exdus cry really made a media storm and threatened FOSTA lawsuits. Generally tumblr was smeared and pushed until they banned porn
@Rairii @skymtf @rant @taylorlorenz @esqueer to be fair, Tumblr themselves also blame credit card processing companies - this isn’t just an Apple problem https://www.pcmag.com/news/tumblr-explains-why-it-still-bans-porn-blame-credit-card-companies-apple
Tumblr Explains Why It Still Bans Porn: Blame Credit Card Companies, Apple

The CEO of Automattic, which acquired Tumblr from Verizon in 2019, says the 'casually porn-friendly era' from over a decade ago is no longer possible in today's tech environment.

PCMag
@brianhough @Rairii @rant @taylorlorenz @esqueer apple tried to force discord to ban porn. The comprimise was made where nsfw could be enabled but with toggle on the desktop app, the the toggle couldn’t be referenced in the app. So when your encounter it it says “NSFW content is blocked on iOS” with zero context. But you can enabled by clicking the enable nsfw content on iOS toggle on the desktop app
@rant @brianhough @Rairii @taylorlorenz @esqueer It is if they don't want to be party to litigation related to hate speech run wild. Or just generally associated with a toxic brand. It will just be a business decision. If Elon wants go not be subject to their rule, he needs to develop his own tech (which I believe he has floated).
