I've seen a few folks join Mastodon and complain that it's too difficult to follow people on other servers, with the cutting and pasting and whatnot. But @bramus has now created a neat Chrome extension (or bookmarklet, if you prefer to go that route) that let's you avoid all that hassle.

I just tested it out... by following @bramus with it!

Mastodon View Profile on My Mastodon Instance

@mmasnick I think I'll check this one out myself. @bramus

Judge: And what are the grounds for divorce?

My soon-to-be-ex: My wife keeps adding completely unvetted chrome extensions to make her Mastodon experience more pleasant

Judge: Granted!

[thx guys]

@kims @bramus um... recommend any other dangerous extensions?
@mmasnick @bramus Yeah, great, but how hard is it really? People just want to be served with a silver frakking spoon.
@nzlemming @bramus I mean, it's a friction point that I've heard from *multiple* people drove them away from finding people to follow on Mastodon.
@mmasnick @bramus People are lazy and stoopid.
@nzlemming @bramus I kinda think helping people get past things that drive them away is useful.
@mmasnick @bramus People learning how to do stuff is more useful, I would say.

@nzlemming @bramus eh. I mean, we can go back to everyone building their own computers, but then most people wouldn't have computers.

Not a fan of gatekeeping like that.

Let's make things work better for people.

@mmasnick @bramus Not gatekeeping, but people who won't learn about the simplest things in their new environment are not likely to learn or respect the culture or mores of it either. They'll demand that it cater to them, rather than adapting to it. Maybe it's best they go to Hive or some other place.
@nzlemming @bramus Ok. I'm going to disagree. I see it as a form of gatekeeping. But, I think we can end this discussion now.
@mmasnick @nzlemming @bramus i'm neither "lazy" nor "stoopid". i have chronic repetitive strain injuries in both hands and using a keyboard is painful. mouse use and clicking even more so. i've found Mastodon a wonderful experience but an incredibly painful one, 1000 times more so than Twit. i search often for people overseas and it's a very long painful process to Favourite and Follow them one by one. those like me, or with arthritis, appreciate help.

@nzlemming @mmasnick It's friction. This extension reduces friction. Nothing more.

Hopefully it can become obsolete over time, once https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/19679 gets resolved, removing that friction.

@bramus ah nice to see solutions are being worked on. This is absolutely something that needs improvement.

@nzlemming @mmasnick @bramus
I use an extension to automate profile handlers when following user accounts, can I still appreciate Mastodon?

No

@mmasnick @bramus @nzlemming I like to be served with a silver spoon. Please continue πŸ™

@mmasnick

Thanks for this, the follow process *is* aggravating

Compounded by the fact that I can't see the people someone I follow is following without opening their instance..

@jerry @mmasnick @bramus @hacks4pancakes
@malwaretech @EvilKiru

This is exactly what I do not want. I do not want to require any browser tools to have my list of follows.

@mmasnick @bramus Is there a Firefox version?

@rogueren @mmasnick I've got something experimental up on https://github.com/bramus/mastodon-profile-redirect/tree/firefox

Requires manifest v3 support, so you need to enable `extensions.manifestV3.enabled`

Will try and submit that version today.

@bramus @mmasnick v3 doesn't disable v2, does it? I need Ublock to still work lol
@mmasnick @rogueren It supports both versions when enabled.

@mmasnick @bramus

Oddly it's very hard if you want to go through someone on another server's follows and follow some subset of them. But it's super easy to follow people on other servers that you see because they've been boosted by or replied to someone you follow, replied to you, followed you, favorited one of your posts, etc.

Thus it's probably a good idea to boost posts from anyone you might want your followers to follow because it makes it much easier to do so.

@mmasnick @bramus the solution in the longer term is an ongoing discussion in the mastodon github about using web protocol handlers. requires no plugin! just needs people to support it. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/19679

GitHub
@mmasnick @mikarv That would be a great addition.

@mmasnick @mikarv @bramus Yes! I'm embarrassed to say how long it took me to understand why click on profile in my feed and then follow works while opening a profile in a new tab then follow doesn't.

It's so obvious when you see it but so counter-intuitive before you do... And a bit of bad UX.

@mmasnick @bramus nice work, but I suspect the Venn Diagram of β€œPeople who find it hard to follow people” and β€œPeople who can be bothered to install an extension” looks a bit like ⭕️ 😭

@mmasnick @bramus they could probably go back to Myspace or AOL....
@zombierottenmcdonald @bramus i am perplexed at the apparent hostility towards making this site more welcoming.

@mmasnick @zombierottenmcdonald @bramus I think that's partially tied with the origins of Mastodon and some of the features designed to deter harassment and abuse. Some things that are an extra step or a hassle also make it harder for trolls and harassers.

And I think there's also a bit of an insular mindset among those more tech minded so when the "tourists" who are not as tech savvy come poking around it feels like an incursion into their space.

I do think one of the things that made fb and the birdsite so ultimately popular is that the user interface has become so simple that even grandma and grandpa can do it. It's allowed the platforms to grow into the mainstream.

Mastodon, while I am really liking it, has a learning curve and isn't as super simple. I don't think it's hard either, but I don't know if it will ever reach that critical mass of something like the birdsite without forgoing some of the ideas and features it was founded on in order to pick up the moms and pops and users averse to learning apps/tech.

@mmasnick @zombierottenmcdonald @bramus Having said all that. I also appreciate things like the chrome extension that makes some of these things easier.

@hierophantpdx @mmasnick @zombierottenmcdonald @bramus

I am tech minded, I was thinking about writhing this exact plugin, because I am lazy.. But over the years I learned to research if someone else did it first, double lazy :D.

@mmasnick @bramus This is even easier - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/mastodon-simplified-federation/ unless I am misunderstanding how this extension works.
Mastodon – Simplified Federation! – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US)

Download Mastodon – Simplified Federation! for Firefox. Simplifies following or interacting with other users on remote Mastodon instances in the Fediverse. It skips the β€œEnter your Mastodon handle” popup and takes you to your own β€œhome” instance, without entering your Mastodon handle on remote instances.

@yoasif @mmasnick Oh yeah that’s nice. I heard it’s broken with version 4 of Mastodon, though.

Would be even nicer if your Masto host would register a protocol handler. That way it would all go automatically: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/19679

@mmasnick @bramus Very interesting! I would try it, but sadly, I use #Firefox - not migrating to Chrome just for that.

@bramus @deavid @mmasnick this works even better for me, as I can bind it to any key combo with Tridactyl (the best Firefox extension for Vim users) :) Thank you for this! :)
@mmasnick @bramus so far my largest annoyance has been that on the web app the elevator bars are the same color as the background and i keep randomly spinning my timeline trying to scroll down a little.
@mmasnick @bramus it’s not that complicated to use. I joined yesterday, got my profile all sorted, did an introduction with hashtags and now tooting along. Can’t understand why some are struggling with it.
@mmasnick @bramus I'm using the 'official' app that everyone seems to dislike, and I just... follow people on different instances by tapping on 'follow'. No cutting and pasting. Or am I missing something?
@FakePlasticDunk @mmasnick This extension is for when you are browsing mastodon on the web.
@FakePlasticDunk @mmasnick @bramus This is addressing the issue of following people for whom you have their address but don’t already see in your feed.
@shawrd773 @mmasnick @bramus ah ok. In that case I'm in the camp of finding it surprising that this is causing consternation, as I've also not had any trouble finding people who I don't immediately see in my feed, but maybe I'm just so used to doing this kind of thing I didn't notice any difficulty.
@FakePlasticDunk if you stumble upon's someone's profile via Google, for example, you will have to do the copy paste dance.
@LieuweR yup, I see what it is people are complaining about now. Although it doesn't seem that much of an issue to me, perhaps I'm just so used to doing such things I don't think of it as a problem.
@mmasnick @bramus Boosting and bookmarking this, thank you! I switched back to Firefox from Chrome earlier this year, but I still use Chrome once in a blue moon. πŸ˜‰

@mmasnick @bramus
This website allows you to search the people you follow on Twitter for possible Mastodon/Fediverse accounts.

https://debirdify.pruvisto.org/

Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@mmasnick @bramus And I haven't heard the word "bookmarklet" used in a long, LONG time! 😜
@mmasnick @bramus Only Chrome or is it there/coming for Firefox et al too? NB: I have 0 problem following people on other servers when I see a post in my feeds. I do have a problem when I go TO their server and try to "like" certain posts. Then, it's on their server.
@mmasnick @bramus I'm okay with the difficulty. slowing down mean I make sure I really want to follow that person or "instance"? it's something I really like about Mastodon , the slower pace allows for better interactions.
@mmasnick @bramus what cutting and pasting? edit: figured out what you were talking about. nevermind.
@mmasnick @bramus did I miss something? I just clicked on a user from a different instance in these replies then clicked "follow" and I'm done. Is that not the usual experience?
@mmasnick @bramus Nice, now all we need is it made available for a good browser
