Researchers have estimated that if we still had a federal assault weapons ban, we would see 70% fewer mass shooting deaths.

S-E-V-E-N-T-Y PERCENT.

Reinstating it should be a no-brainer.

@rbreich From a public health stand point that's amazing...actually, from any standpoint that's amazing. Would you mind linking to the sources?
@CAPT_Irrelevant @BusterNutz77 @rbreich Australia's AW ban with way further than ours...not really a fair comparison.
@CAPT_Irrelevant @BusterNutz77 @rbreich didn’t australia gun ownership actually rise after the 1996 ban

@Not_A_Seagull @BusterNutz77 @rbreich It wasn't an outright ban on all guns. It was ban on assault rifles & strict regulations ownership & registration.

Regarding the ownership claim: https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2021/04/28/new-gun-ownership-figures-revealed-25-years-on-from-port-arthur.html

New gun ownership figures revealed 25 years on from Port Arthur

@BusterNutz77 @rbreich
Every other country on the planet.
@RobHadley @BusterNutz77 @rbreich But US is unique. No gun in other nations deserve to be in hands of US people more than guns in US.
@BusterNutz77 @rbreich hoping there is a response on the source. Respect for asking the question 👏

@rbreich

One more obvious thing that Pelosi couldn't get done in 15 years in power.

calling her "the most effective speaker" is a sick joke.

@hackbod @thelonious08 @rbreich yes, she did. And like it or not, she didn’t have a magic wand to wave over the Senate.
@karoli @hackbod @thelonious08 @rbreich Not having a magic wand ? Another failure.

@mrraccoon @karoli @hackbod

If she was incapable of getting the job done, she should have resigned and let someone competent take over.

She was the worst House Speaker ever.

@mrraccoon @karoli

How many times was she in Maine campaigning against Susan Collins?

What effort did Pelosi make to support Dem Senate candidates and/or put pressure on sitting Senators to do the right thing?

You guessed it. Nada. Zilch.

She did nothing. She was happy making excuses for 30 years.

and since Dem voters don't demand performance, she took 12 weeks of vacation every year, and is celebrated as being super "effective".

@thelonious08 @mrraccoon excuse me. The Speaker of the House is not obligated to campaign for Senate candidates.

@karoli @mrraccoon

She's not obligated to do anything.

but if she want to deliver for the American people, she'll do what needs to be done.

@karoli @mrraccoon

She went to France. She went to Africa. She sipped wine in Napa Valley.

She wasn't obligated to do any of that.

and doing all that did not in any way benefit the American people.

Pelosi's job performance is an F-

@karoli @mrraccoon @thelonious08 Happy Thanksgiving and this is the least “pragmatic” take I’ve seen in awhile. Nobody here needs to keep talking to this person.

@TonyStark @karoli @mrraccoon

If Democrats want to get something done in the next 15 years,

we have to do the opposite of what we were doing the last 15 years.

and Pelosi-style leadership was a giant anchor around our necks.

Let's do something a lot less pathetic from now on.

@karoli @hackbod

Making excuses is easy.

Leading the people, getting the support you need to get positive change implemented is what a true leader does.

Pelosi failed. She got nothing done.

@hackbod

Exactly my point. Didn't get it done.

Fail.

@thelonious08 @rbreich Wow, if only she'd have snapped her fingers and made it so.

@dingussr

Ineffective leaders make excuses.

Competent ones get the job done.

@thelonious08

People who don't understand how congress works make statements like the one you made.

People who do, don't.

@dingussr

It's very easy to make excuses.

People like you lower expectations so much

that our quality of life constantly declines.

Other House Speakers have gotten tons of shit done. Some have significantly changed our country according to their own desires.

Pelosi walks away having let the Cons win on every front for well over a decade.

@dingussr

Specifically re: "People who don't understand how congress works..."

Congress works according to rules made by the majority in Congress. When Pelosi wasn't getting crushed in elections, like a total loser politician, she occasionally in spite of herself, got that majority. She chose to make Congress work (in her case not work) the way it did.

Acting like the Speaker of the House has no power is a pathetic lie.

@thelonious08

After the House passed an assault weapons ban in July of 2022, what specifically should #Pelosi have done to push that through the Senate?

@dingussr

So you're saying she did something about this giant DEADLY problem 15 years after she became Leader?

That alone is proof that she's useless.

@dingussr

Why can't you just admit that she failed?

Her record of losing every single fight over and over is public knowledge.

Oh, wait... she got the minimum wage raised....

to $7.25.... 15 years ago....

Since then.... FAIL.

Our country is so much worse off today because of her ineptitude.

@thelonious08

Oh so #Pelosi did something after all and now you want to move the goalposts and assert that it wasn't soon enough?

Just to recap: You replied to a general comment about reinstating the assault weapon ban by bashing #Pelosi specifically for not making it happen when a ban passed the house under her leadership.

@dingussr

15 years late

and you're bragging about that.

WOW. I've seen some pathetic excuse-making for Nancy, but you win the prize.

(also Pelosi *did* lots of stuff. She went to France. She toured Africa. She sipped wine in Napa. What I said was that she didn't get anything done. Zero accomplishments.)

@dingussr

but she's gone now.

You don't have to make excuses for her anymore.

Currently we have an urgent need to honestly address everything we did wrong in the last 15 years, and start doing the opposite.

Pelosi-style leadership utterly failed.

It's time for big change.

@thelonious08 @rbreich
Pelosi passed gun control bills in 2019 and 2022. Blocked by relentless Republicans more interested in demonizing democrats and progressives than getting business done from infrastructure to school lunches to mass shootings.

@BlackOrchidRising

As I said, she failed.

Defeated by "relentless Republicans"

A long career of accomplishing nothing.

@rbreich IMHO, there is no reason for civilian ownership of high powered assault rifles UNLESS they are part of a trained standing militia (like in Switzerland).

There should be training & licensing for ANY fire arm - and to even purchase ammo. W/ refresher training every 2 yrs.

I mean why not? In order to drive a car you must be trained & have a license.

@CarlVernet @rbreich because driving a car isn't spelled out as a right in the constitution.
@skyssx @rbreich The 2nd Amendment talks about a "well regulated Militia" so it DOES NOT spell out a right.
@CarlVernet @rbreich yes and US code says "the milita" is the citizenry. It's quite clearly defined if you're not deliberately misreading it.
@skyssx @CarlVernet @rbreich
The legal definition of militia at the time of the writing of the Constitution was
“Able bodied MEN between ages 18 and 40, under the command of an officer of the State”.
Therefore anyone over 40 and women are not included. Also, the ONLY recognized militias are the Naval Militia and the National Guard.
@rbreich @PJLavatai @skyssx @CarlVernet Apparently we’ve since raised that to 45 and extended to include women — but only women serving in the National Guard. https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?path=/prelim@title10/subtitleA/part1/chapter12&edition=prelim
10 USC Ch. 12: THE MILITIA

@glucas @rbreich @skyssx @CarlVernet
Which makes sense.
Now if the rest would makes sense……
@CarlVernet @rbreich And liability insurance.

@karoli @rbreich In some jurisdictions around the US, if you live in an apartment and own any kind of gun, you must also purchase liability insurance and have trigger locks or gun safes.

As a gun owner, trigger locks AND gun safes are all part of how you properly & responsibly store a gun.

@karoli @rbreich And as an FYI, I have a Federal Firearms License (FFL) and have taught gun safety before.
@CarlVernet @rbreich I don’t personally own guns, though I’ve considered it in recent times. But those I know who do are meticulous about gun safes and gun safety.

@karoli @rbreich Please have a good reason for owning a gun. Then take lessons on how to shoot the gun and then take safety & care lessons.

If buying a gun for home defense, pls consider a shotgun over a handgun. If you miss w/ a handgun, that gun could be used on you. You will NEVER miss w/ a shotgun - just point and shoot.

Bottom line, have a good reason for a gun & get trained.

@CarlVernet @rbreich I would never own a gun without training. Ever.
@rbreich It takes more than brains to do what’s right. It takes compassion and the GOP has NONE.
@rbreich I value all I learn from you. Reinstatement is a no-brainer, except for to the no brain crowd.

@rbreich But let us not make the mistake of delineating acceptable vs unacceptable by easily evaded criteria.

Rather, we should ban firearms that can impart N or more joules of energy into projectiles within a span of M seconds. That is easily measured and highly objective.

@karlauerbach @rbreich
Exactly. The second amendment does not have to be repealed, but it can be brought up to date to reflect the weapons today versus the muskets that were available then. When people are dying en mass because of the power, accuracy, and sheer number of bullets that can be deployed…something MUST be done. The stranglehold of the NRA on our government is ludicrous.

@rbreich is there anything more that needs to be said beyond The Onion's "‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens"

https://www.theonion.com/no-way-to-prevent-this-says-only-nation-where-this-r-1823016659

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens

PARKLAND, FL—In the hours following a violent rampage in Florida in which a lone attacker killed 17 individuals and seriously injured over a dozen others, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Wednesday that there was no way to prevent the massacre…

The Onion

@rbreich uh, is this ignoring all handgun shootings or something?

Handgun shootings (even mass handgun shootings) vastly outnumber rifle shootings.

@WomanCorn @rbreich
The majority of handgun shootings are suicides….mainly men between the ages of 18 and 25.
This is, in itself, a two pronged problem.
Mental health is a huge issue.
Mental health and guns together is a monstrous issue.
We cannot cure all who are mentally I’ll, but we can keep guns out of their hands.
@rbreich Corrupt Republicans are paid by the gun industry to ensure that we are saturated with deadly weapons. The NRA want no gun regulation whatsoever and our spineless politicians and Supreme Court will do the will of the gun industry.
This is how things work in a money-driven political system.
@rbreich You should see the spreadsheet @thatnickpowersguy has on gun violence.The data is pretty clear.
@Dopamine @rbreich @thatnickpowersguy
Where can I see the spreadsheet ? I made one also, comparing deaths by state and gun laws, but no longer have it.
@PJLavatai @Dopamine @rbreich I've got a link in my bio that will take you to the hub of all of my links. There's a free embedded version on the website and a patreon where you can download the color-coded pretty version if you want.
