The stricter your gun laws the lower your gun violence. It’s empirical evidence. The argument begins and ends here.

Note: this chart is from last year. Since then Texas has massively eased its gun laws and it’s gun violence has skyrocketed. You don’t have to live this way, but if you want to change it you have to elect gun sense democrats to your state governments. Elections matter.

@TLDuryea You mean the GOP's concurrent strategies of (1) thoughts and prayers and (2) MOAR GUNS--aren't working??? Shocking. #StopGunViolence #MomsDemandAction

@TLDuryea okay, Texan here. So I agree with your analysis. But here's the thing I hear from members of both the Black and LGBTQ communities I speak to in and around the blue dot. We need to be armed to protect ourselves against those wanting to do harm to us.

Before you respond that thinking is wrong, reminder of how the NRA came out against the BPP in California. Reminder of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negroes_with_Guns

@TLDuryea
It’s the guns
“Although opponents of sensible gun control…continue to put the spotlight on the shooters’ motivations or unstable mental states, these are cynical diversions from the one obvious truth: The common thread…is the absurdly easy access to guns.”

@TLDuryea exactly.
The inverse correlation between strength of gun laws and rates of #gunviolence is almost a straight line.
While ultimately, we need federal laws to reduce trafficking, states that have passed common sense gun laws exhibit much lower rates of gun violence.

@TLDuryea I appreciate that you’re bringing data and information to people, but given that a large number of LGBTQIA+ folks use Mastodon and have been on this platform for a very long time, AND we just experienced another mass shooting at one of our clubs, please consider using a CW for toots about gun violence.

Plus, you never know who has been a victim of gun violence directly or indirectly, and it’s kind to use the tools we have not to trigger someone’s trauma responses.

@serenissima Thanks for your post. What is a CW?

@TLDuryea Content warning! You have the ability to conceal your content except for a little bit of text describing why it’s concealed, like this post! Just click the CW in your browser or app, and it will give you this option.

It’s also fun to use it for silly purposes, too, like concealing a punchline to a joke you put in the “warning” line.

Let’s start with the easy one: guns."

@TLDuryea it’s not the data, but the mindset to accept the issue is real and willing to solve it.
@TLDuryea If “more guns” means a safer community, then the US should be the safest place on earth. Data like this chart proves the opposite is true. #CommonSenseGunLaws
@TLDuryea All we have to do is look at other nations. None have the kind of regular mass shootings we see in America on a regular basis.
