The NEW Soylent Green

A Moses-like figure stands before the mic at an NRA convention and thunders, “I will give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.”

At the end of the sci-fi film Soylent Green, that same actor implores his detective boss to spread the news, “Soylent Green is people!”

In the movie, as the corpses pile up from an overcrowded, miserable earth, they are carted away in garbage trucks, secretly converted to Soylent Green, and fed back to the living. Soylent Green is better than the old Red and Yellow varieties, but it is scarce, so there are riots. A detective played by Charlton Heston discovers the deception. In a word, humanity has become cannibals, feeding upon itself, in a state-sanctioned system of cyclical violence.

Such is the world created by the NRA. It plays upon the irrational fears of a few to continue to thwart common sense gun legislation. Its largely successful lobbying over the years has distorted the original intention of the Second Amendment so much so that it has become almost impossible to pass laws more in keeping with the Founders’ intent.

When the bodies continue to pile up as a result of gun violence, and there is no legislative change primarily due to the lobbying of the NRA and the like, we are in every sense of the word disrespecting the dead and feeding upon ourselves.

In a state-sanctioned system of cyclical violence.

Like in Soylent Green.

And like the movie, the end result is not very pretty.

But go ahead. Watch the news.

Take another bite.

Republicans don’t care how many people die. We must vote them out! #CommonSenseGunLaws
Mass killings can be prevented. For years the Republican and now MAGA refuse to enact any safe guards to reduce gun violence.
Remember that when you vote.

Republicans are forcing women to have more children but don’t want to feed them or provide healthcare. Now they want to flood the streets with more guns in a country known for mass shootings in schools. Sounds like they want more children for target practice. #Uvalde #SandyHook #CommonSenseGunLaws

The first graders who survived Sandy Hook will vote in their first presidential election

Grace Fischer survived the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School by staying quiet and huddled, as her first grade teacher softly read “The Nutcracker.”

Just a few examples of #commonsensegunlaws from our gunsense president:
This is only 1 of the Sandy Hook survivors, who graduates high school this week. It reminds me of a colleague's experience yesterday, meeting with Ted Cruz. All he could offer were thoughts, prayers and right wing gun lobby talking points which are not based on any factual studies. . These kids don't care about your thoughts and prayers! They want #MEANINGFULACTION on #commonsensegunlaws because we KNOW that #gunlawssavelives
This #GVSURVIVORSWEEK we're sharing stories from survivors of gun violence. I will never forget the horror & helplessness I felt that day when I heard about Sandy Hook. I thought surely THAT would be the thing that caused America to #DoSomethingToEndGunViolence I found MOMSDEMANDACTION.ORG shortly afterward and remain committed to fighting for #CommonSenseGunLaws. Twenty innocent first grade children and six of my colleagues were killed.

Everytown for Gun Safety

I've always liked the "gun owners must have insurance" angle. It would go a long way to a) make firearm ownership externalities (ie, #suicide, #homicide, serious injury) more visible, b) begin to address the impacts of those externalities (compensation to #victims, reimbursement for #EmergencyServices) and c) I'm pretty sure requiring insurance is not prohibited by the #Constitution!
