I stumbled into #Bookwyrm yesterday and got all sorts of excited! No algorithms pushing up 5-star positive reviews to increase commerce. No ads. No crews of super-fan marketing armies. (I'm an #sff #romancelandia #literary #allthebooks omnivore. Some types of books on goodreads are just roiling with suspect reviews.) I'm trying to settle into #mastodon before really diving in, but I couldn't resist. I already have an account and my 1st "now reading" book!

@thisjulieday Do you think it's a decent way of finding new books to read? For their faults, commerce-centric algorithms do have that strength--they show what's selling. Important, so as to not waste time on a terrible book.
@dubiago for me it is, but I tend to follow my own interests. Even books with great editorial reviews and incredible writing can not be huge commercial successes. And I enjoy small press books, where this is especially true. If the write up is good and the publisher is listed, I'm happier w/o the algorithm.
@thisjulieday I may have to spin up an instance of that, too 😎

@thisjulieday
Did you know that thanks to the magic of the Fediverse you can also interact with Bookwyrm from Masto ?

Just subscribe to someone's @ from BookWyrm here, and you'll be able to see their new reviews and comment them.

@Zekovski I did not until just now! Thanks for that!

@thisjulieday #Bookwyrm is really good 😊 maybe you already saw it, but if you don’t find a book (or an edition) you can manually add it to open library (one of the sources for bookwyrm) and it will show up. It’s a feature that I love, as in this way one can also help the entire community

Editing Open Library | Open Library

Open Library is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published. Read, borrow, and discover more than 3M books for free.

@andreatitolo @thisjulieday can you import your "read" list from goodreads somehow? because I don't think I'd ever find the spoons to do that by hand
@skye @andreatitolo I don't know, honestly. I was going to do it by hand for my favorites only. But your idea is do much better....
@skye @thisjulieday Mmmh I’ve never used goodreads but bookwyrm is able to import data from a csv. You should be able to export your goodreads library as a csv I believe and import them without issues 🤔
@andreatitolo @skye that sounds right and so much easier than what I planned!
@andreatitolo Thanks for the tip! I was just looking at open library and trying to figure out the connection. I'm totally onboard with adding more books!
@thisjulieday well now i have to figure out #Bookwyrm ! I just started using Storygraph as an alternative to Good Reads.
@Biodomer how does storygraph feel to you? Is it worth taking a look?
@thisjulieday it took some getting used to, but I appreciate the visual interpretation of what I’m reading and how it’s also broken down into recurring themes. I also really like that it’s an independently owned and operated.
@Biodomer feels like I should give it a try.
@thisjulieday it’s worth taking a poke around, for sure. It also can port over your Goodreads stuff so you don’t lose your stuff.
@Biodomer that is super useful
@thisjulieday any platform that makes it easier to bounce around and try it all out, it a good one in my books. Pun not intended, but I’m keeping it.
@Biodomer agreed!
@thisjulieday it’s also sort of strange, too. I’m so used to the people I engage with elsewhere knowing about The Newest Olympian and other podcasts I follow but here I’ve already recommended it 2-3 times
@Biodomer okay, so yes, I am another one. I don't know either of those podcasts 😂
@thisjulieday haha The Newest Olympian is a guy named Mike who is in his 30’s reading the Percy Jackson series for the first time. He did Potterless before this, same deal but with Harry Potter. He has guests on who grew up with the series and each episode is a chapter or so and Mike makes predictions about what’s going to happen and no on confirms or denies or spoils it for him. It’s a lot of fun.
@Biodomer Omg! That sounds hilarious.
@thisjulieday it’s a total blast! He gets very excited when he makes predictions and knowing what actually happens you’re sort of in on the joke with everyone else. He’s perfect for it. At the end of each book he has an expert come on to talk about the mythology covered in the book they just finished
@Biodomer I'm going try it on my drive to work today!
@thisjulieday let me know what you think! Episode 0 is him explaining how much he actually knows about the series/Greek mythology, and then episode 1 is the actual start. 0 will give you a good feel for Mike.
@thisjulieday it feels a bit more like a community and less like a straight up, bare bones, tracking system.
@Biodomer I'll have to see how that feels. I'm feeling full of new communities at the moment 😂 the #fediverse is so engaging!
@thisjulieday I’m definitely trying to figure out how to spend my time across all these new platforms that have emerged haha.
@Biodomer I'm actually enjoying them, which is a bit of a problem at the moment 😂
@thisjulieday same, I’m really enjoying the smaller community here
@Biodomer How do I get connected to #bookworm
@TinaSohl I’m very much still learning about it. StoryGraph is an app and fairly straight forward. Bookwyrm is here https://bookwyrm.social and there may be an instance on Mastodon for it specifically
BookWyrm

None

@thisjulieday I use #Storygraph and it's very much the same.
@samarcand I've decided to try out #Storygraph as well 🙃
@thisjulieday if you want to follow me and judge my reading habits, I'm ellen_mellor on there.
@samarcand Ha! Im not really into judging others reading. I go down some pretty funky rabbit holes myself 🙃I'm @[email protected]
@samarcand I couldn't find you. It could be me still getting used to the interface. Could you give me your entire account name?
@thisjulieday Thank you for the reminder, I had been meaning to check this out.
@kkffoo I highly recommend 🙃

@thisjulieday How is Bookwyrm?

Can you read ebooks on it, because i’ve been looking for a good app to do that

@actuallyAx I don't think so. It's for book tracking such as you find on goodreads, librarything, or Bookbub. There are plenty of free ereader apps out there. I use the Libby, kobo, and kindle apps and occasionally the Apple Books app.
@thisjulieday Bookwyrm is on my list of things to try, your comment is making me more enthusiastic about it

@thisjulieday

Enjoy it while it lasts. Where there are people, marketing will follow.

Most social media sites are rife with state and private public influence operations. If Mastodon is popular enough to be relevant, they'll be here too.
