anybody who complains about how difficult #mastodon is to understand (or use) clearly never had to uudecode a zmodem'ed jpeg before being able to view it #retro
@ChrisPirillo or use a BBS
@Kanter ...one for which you had to use telnet!
@ChrisPirillo ha, I remember having to meet a sysop in person to get access to their BBS. It was much easier to sign up here.

@ChrisPirillo

Whenever I hear about the difficulty of Mastodon, I start worrying that I'm missing something since it doesn't seem much different than Twitter...

@ChrisPirillo Considering that zmodem is a binary transfer protocol, I don't think I ever needed to uudecode a jpeg coming in over zmodem. I think I really only did that with binaries I downloaded over Usenet.
I used to get unix utilities from usenet packaged with shar. Shar files were self-extracting shell scripts. Yeah, we used to run random scripts that we found on the internet.

@ChrisPirillo
Zmodem! I haven't seen that word in, easy, 20 years! I didn't even remembered it...=)
@ixtlidekami ...or kermit!
@ChrisPirillo
Heard of It but never usted Kermit. The BBSs I was only had x and zmodem. I miss that time...
@ChrisPirillo serves you right for trying to download troirikerxxx.jpg via that Wildcat! gateway
@ChrisPirillo zmodem, the only use I have for it these days is when I deleted the firmware on a router, or switch, and forgot to replace it with a new version
@ChrisPirillo they never downloaded songs on Napster using a dial-up modem.
@paninid ...pfff, what about RealPlayer?!
@ChrisPirillo RealPlayed came out ages after Compuserve was the AOL also-ran

@ChrisPirillo Many warez were traded on the Usenet boards with UUdecode back in the day.

Remember Ram Doubler?

@jessl3d ...oh, yes. All of those tools were critical. I also used 4DOS.
@ChrisPirillo Ymodem-g was even worst. No error correction.
