I read something about people with #ADHD being more likely to develop #Parkinsons due to the same dopamine deficiency and now I'm worried.
@Richard_Littler My understanding is that there's a slight increase in Parkinson rates associated with methylphenidate/Ritalin, not a huge increase, rather than with ADHD itself.
@mikeythenurse I read that ADHDers are 2.6 times more likely to develop Parkinsons, and ADHDers on meds are 4 times more likely. However, the study also stated it's very possible that it's not the meds but the fact that people whose ADHD is so strong that it requires meds is the issue, and it might be the strength of their ADHD more than the meds per se. More studies are required.
@Richard_Littler @mikeythenurse I’d read that, too. As an ADHDer, I highly recommend taking a 23andMe or similar test. I did and it showed that I don’t have the Parkinson’s variants. Put my mind at rest. Not literally, obvs.
@Richard_Littler interesting. Do you have a source?
@Richard_Littler the kind of information that freaks me out and my mind instantly starts seeing my hands shaking.
@Richard_Littler usually the study refers to people on certain ADHD meds although it’s not clear to me that age, gender and young onset information is neatly delineated. That said I’m 8-10 years into physical PD symptoms, and only recently diagnosed with ADHD, after pursuing that loosely for a few years. Symptoms were there since I was young. A huge relief to me, the diagnosis. It has pros and cons.
@Richard_Littler as someone with ADHD I am baffled how you manage to consistently produce such amazing Scarfolk content!
@mully I made it work by doing it in manageable little chunks, but I think my autism probably helped out a bit too.
@Richard_Littler thank you for replying! My auDHD girlfriend reckons that's how she manages to do it, the hyperfocus coupled with special interests. My hyperfocuses tend to be absurd and fleeting
