I never properly introduced myself when I joined Oct. 29.

I have been teaching #journalism at NYU since 1986. I have a PhD in media studies. My masters thesis was on McLuhan. My PhD thesis was about the concept of "the public."

I write a lot about press coverage of politics, and try to puzzle out what journalists as a group are thinking, which is why my site is called pressthink.org

I've been online since 1996. Been blogging since 2003. On Twitter since 2008.

Thanks for making Mastodon.

@jayrosen_nyu Hi Jay - have enjoyed reading your work via the birdsite so glad to see you here (where I can fix my typos!)
@eraitch That is a great thing about Mastodon.
@jayrosen_nyu You hardly have to introduce yourself but nice to know some background facts
@ellenmignone Thanks for your kindness.

@jayrosen_nyu

Thanks for being here. I look forward to more of your insightful media criticism.

@brian_wooley Thanks for your kindness.
@jayrosen_nyu Your being here is one of the many reasons I am happy to have quit twitter.
@jayrosen_nyu thanks for being here. Been a fan of you and @jeffjarvis for a while. Nice to have the media commentary move here.
@jayrosen_nyu NYU Journalism ‘05. So grateful to that program and what it did for me as a writer and a critical thinker. I miss Prof Ludlum so much. ❤️
@Half_Shiksa Always a delight to meet an NYU grad.
@jayrosen_nyu grateful for your work, and glad you’re here
@boulderbee Thanks for your kindness.
@jayrosen_nyu thanks for coming to Mastadon. It’s a better place with you here.
@brewster Thanks for your kindness.
@jayrosen_nyu Well. IMO albeit still a social media platform, Mastadon seems to be a better “medium” for the message!
@jayrosen_nyu hello jay, longtime follower from birdland, here. so glad to see you here. thank you for making the transition. very much looking forward to your ongoing insights. 🙏
@jayrosen_nyu @Julie definitely follow Jay and Julie
@jayrosen_nyu One of my exes took a class from you back in the 90s. I knew I remembered the name from someplace else.
@jayrosen_nyu
Glad to meet you. New here as well. BJ - UT Austin 1975. Ran for editor, lost. But so did Mary Walsh.
@EddieTX14 I ran for editor of my college paper... and won. That started it all.
@jayrosen_nyu Glad to see you here. I followed you on Twitter but am mostly leaving Twitter behind now.
@jayrosen_nyu Hi Jay, impressive career. I frankly just followed though because you picked an Elvis Costello joint for your theme song😁 (My EC fave: Watching the Detectives.)
@juliana Watching the Detectives is great, but it wouldn't be a theme song. A theme song is not the same as a "favorite" song.
@jayrosen_nyu Thank you for the biography. Given your expertise in the teachings of Marshall McLuhan, I'm wondering if you've analyzed twitter, etc. social media based on his theories of 'hot' and 'cold', etc? Similarly, Donald Trump. How would McLuhan have seen him? Would like very much to read same. Thanks, -todd
PressThink: Bill O'Reilly and the Paranoid Style in News

@jayrosen_nyu Hello! I often saw your posts RTed over there but since we don’t have that function on Mastadon, I’m following you here now. Thanks for the introduction.
@jayrosen_nyu Hello from the Young-Howze Theatre Journal!
@jayrosen_nyu thank you for introducing yourself.

@jayrosen_nyu

I used to follow you on twitter

Thank you for being here

Twitter gives me the seasick nowadays

@jayrosen_nyu Great to see you here, Jay! I have long appreciated your insight into journalism and your arguments have certainly made their way into my journalism classes. Looking forward to seeing more of those here!

@rodzam Thank you, Rodrigo. Here's a new book that might interest you.

@jayrosen_nyu Thanks, Jay! Allie does great work so I'm excited to read this latest contribution.
@jayrosen_nyu wonderful to see you moved over here, as I am very close to abandoning the birdsite completely. Curious if you are going to discuss the friction that journa.host is dealing with over here Re: policy differences.
@ProgGrrl I noted that there was a meeting and an apology among the participants. I don't plan to do anything about it.
@jayrosen_nyu I think I know what you’re talking about, a very particular case. But I’m referring to a more general sense of finding one’s collective feet in a new space, deciding on best practices, etc. NB: I am not a journalist, just another one of your news junkie followers.
@ProgGrrl That's something I might write about, yes, once I learn more about the differences, and have something original to say. I hate to duplicae what others are saying.
@jayrosen_nyu my son is an NYU grad with a degree in journalism. Great program
