I don’t remember where I first found this, but here’s how the #mastadon feeds work 💙

@Manny and that is the importance of #Boosting over #Likes.

So, is there a danger of #RecklessBoosting ?

I #Boost a post if I think others might find it of value, and I might #Like it at the same time.

If I only #Like it it's to thank the Poster/Tooter/Publisher for their comment, but feel it only has appeal to me.

@SpudULike @Manny the FIRST time you boost or favorite or reply on mastodon they should show you this post before you can.
@Manny This is incredibly helpful, thank you!
@Manny You should add Relays there. It is a CRUCIAL part of Mastodon. Then that final "No" will probably be a "yes".
@Manny that kind of sucks in a way if your friends are on another site. Like I'm in lol but I don't know anyone else on this one.
@omar_al_photog @Manny if they follow you, it makes no difference.

@Manny I first saw this graphic on a post by @clive here:

Come Join Me On Mastodon, Folks - Clive Thompson - Medium

Now that Elon Musk is thrashing around inside the Twitter headquarters, many Twitter users are joining Mastodon — jussssst in case Twitter goes down in a flaming wreck. I’m on Mastodon myself: I’m…

@Manny

That would seem to be relatively easy to game or manipulate 🤔

@Manny
Excellent! Thanks for posting.

@Manny recognizing that this may not be 100% accurate, I still take extreme pleasure in the idea that the algorithm is OSS instead of some proprietary thing that is optimized to bring more $s to some company or person who definitely doesn’t have my or my community’s best interest in mind

On Facebook briefly last night I literally had to scroll through 20 ads and things some such company thought I’d be interested in before I found a post from a friend

I don’t like being manipulated

@Manny That's all fine & well but opening those timelines on the web (not available in the app) is completely useless: they are scrolling too fast to read.
@Manny I can see this going to be a fascinating rabbit hole to fall down

@Manny Oooh, this is super helpful.
@Manny This should be of interest to you, @danielhorton , since you've just joined.
@Manny @hankg I would love to see this updated to cover two "edge cases". First, what about toots that include a hashtag that I follow? Second, how do #relay servers figure into this?
@Manny This is helpful, but incomplete (I think). I’m sure that boosted toots from people I don’t follow (eg you) also appear on my Home timeline.
@Manny I believe the ultimate origin is here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/6812
Make it clear that "local timeline" doesn't mean *geographically* local · Issue #6812 · mastodon/mastodon

Because of "location of local timeline #5784". I don't understand attributs filter for local timeline. I'am in guadeloupe i read post from swiss, and others distant contry. Maybe the term "local ti...

@Manny I think this graphic must have predated relays? It doesn't mention them
@Manny Very helpful thank you.
@Manny Tweets are called toots here? That’s unfortunate since toot is a slang word for fart. 😬
@Manny this explains a lot
@Manny Thank you! This was not all clear to me (especially what makes up the Federated feed). Makes me think instance more important than I realized. Or maybe not, if I have some good diversity here...
@Manny Android app doesn't have Local or Federated timelines 🤦🏼‍♀️
@Manny seems it is DESIGNED in a way to provide better life quality!!!
@Manny I'm not sure this right though. Don't boost cause a toot to show up in your Home timeline?
@bwyble I would assume that a boost is treated the same way as the booster rooting it 🤷🏽‍♂️
@Manny Right, so there's one additional branch point that's missing: "Did someone I follow boost @Foo's toot? " That would direct also to Home timeline.
@Manny how about relays though
@Manny — Good information; I’m still confused; my god, I’m old.
