Dear Twitter ex-pats. When we all flounced out of Twitter loudly proclaiming we were going to Mastodon this sent a message to trolls, nazis that they could set up servers & come here.

If anyone gets harrassed with hatespeech pls note that that is not the culture of Mastodon. Please report & block those users. If you notice a pattern from the same weird domain, block that domain, write a post of the server name w/ a hashtag fediblock so your server admin can follow up & block it for everyone.

@caffeneko from what I've read of the Black experience on Mastodon over the past few years, it definitely is the culture of Mastodon. That's separate from the existence of redress and the desire that it not be so.
@planetdma That is upsetting to hear. I will do my best to combat that where I see it.
@caffeneko Even reframing the belief that any white-dominated space in which you move could possibly not have bigotry as an inherent part of the culture would be one more awakened voice in a conversation saturated with denial.
@planetdma I know that it is a goal. I know that many of the devs and server mods fled spaces of fascism. But there is absolutely room for growth and learning.
@planetdma These are important conversations to have, and nuanced ones b/c we are seeing a huge influx of global ethno-fascism in US and Europe. And they are using tech spaces for a lot of this abuse.
@caffeneko These are basic understandings of how this world has operated, uninterrupted and with great visibility and vigor, for literal centuries that other people need to finally learn about on their own time so affected people can collectively decompress and discuss the weather and have a break from this nonsense.
@caffeneko Join a good server. I’m confident twit.social won’t put up with it.
@ericyoung @caffeneko "Join a good server" is exactly the kind of subtle racist response people are talking about. Please read more about this before suggesting similar strategies.

@caffeneko Mastodon offers a great feature where you can block an entire instance.

If there are known hate group instances, name and shame, so we can all block them outright.

(Don't block indieweb.social, just showing how one would block an instance domain using your toot as an example).

@atoponce @caffeneko "Here is how to block" is exactly the kind of subtly #racist #mansplaining people are talking about. Please read more about this before suggesting similar strategies.

@caffeneko @ratwerks @atoponce

I found it helpful.

@TheDivineMrsS @caffeneko @ratwerks @atoponce sounds like you don't have a chip on your shoulder when people give general advice

@caffeneko @Matcha @ratwerks @atoponce

I’m a newbie here so find all good advice & where to find things helpful. I thought the post really useful. False allegations of racism & mansplaining irritate me though unsurprisingly…

@TheDivineMrsS @caffeneko @ratwerks @atoponce I too found it useful. So I thank the original author.
I am compelled to say that in this case there is absolutely no need to chip in or for judging of others when you can see, they are genuinely trying to help.
Please, let's not go down the same old road of behaviours & reactions. This is a time for new beginnings.

@ratwerks @atoponce @caffeneko i don't believe it's meant as a "just ignore it" situation. Reporting and blocking are useful tools, and blocking an entire domain can actually keep others from spewing hatred around us. Think before you speak.
@ratwerks Why are you even policing my thread on this? My whole post was about how to block nazis. Why are you attacking posters agreeing who are just giving additional visual directions calling them racist or mansplainers? Racist to who? My post was a single post giving broad directions to new ppl from Twitter. Cool your jets or I'm going to block you. Oh and I'm queer too, a white person and not a man just chill the f out. Sheesh.
@caffeneko @ratwerks this person gives off "white savior complex" vibes out the fucking wazoo.

@caffeneko Mastodon is a reskin of GNUSocial, a social network that catered to people who were banned from everywhere else. Their trolls and nazis were here before us, so still act with care.

Mastodon isn't a troll-free Narnia, it's the the local flea swap meet, so expect that sometimes you're going to see some dubious figures in the corners.

@Almafeta Thank you for the context - if I could edit my post without losing all these comments I would but I think if I edited my post I would orphan all these comments, right?

@caffeneko I'm afraid it would orphan and break the chain.

Seems LiveJournal was the last place on the Internet where the edit button worked.

@Almafeta @caffeneko Good news! i have seen version 4 and the edit there works!
@caffeneko out of curiosity, is there a global or admin shared list of known mal-actors?
@jb Not sure, perhaps server admins have a block list.
@caffeneko yeah. Was just thinking about it in terms of IRC’s server admin.
@jb Their block list would probably pertain more to bad-domains tbh
@caffeneko A note to anyone on meh.social: Just shoot me a DM or reach out in the plethora of other ways (Discord, Insta, Facebook) and let me know and I'll happily regulate which servers we federate with. Otherwise, use your tools and block/mute as you would elsewhere. Curate your feed!
@caffeneko i’m hesitant to encourage block lists but would if there was a reliable and trustworthy body with appropriate checks that could manage one designed specifically to protect against hate speech.
@dell My guess is that with the # fediblock tag, that server moderators who follow it use it to research reported servers and add them to the block list for their own instance.
@caffeneko is there no check before they create their servers?
@rkd993 that is a good and interesting question.
@caffeneko
@rkd993
All you need to create a server is a domain ($15) and the ability to pay for a cloud server ($2.5-10/mo). After that, you can follow and toot at anyone who hadn't blocked you or your domain. It's similar to email, though these days there are a huge number of anti-spam systems for email, and most moderation in the fediverse is manual.
@caffeneko Looks like we’re onto a system that isn’t designed to profit from people reacting to them. They’re going to hate it here and I’m here for it.
@caffeneko I'm loving this site.It it's reassuring to be collectivised in such a way that we don't have to expect abuse as a natural part of having a thought in our heads.
@caffeneko @admin
Are you aware of the fediblock hashtag?
Looks like de blue bird is going down, so all those trolls will have to go somewhere 🙂
@caffeneko Some good sense here, Shannon. I'm in the process of getting established at Mastodon, whilst keeping an eye on Twitter. I've no intention of indulging in conspiracy theories. It would be surprising though, if the right aren't looking to exploit this situation for all they're worth.
@caffeneko I’m liberally using the block button while I’m still on Twitter to help stop them coming over.

@caffeneko Thank you, boosted.

I got a scary, hate-filled, disgusting reply to a post last night. Only been here 24 hours. Reported and blocked them.

@caffeneko This is a good set of insights for new(er) Mastodon users. #noxp
Will do. I was tempted to tweet about but decided best not to, as I had a suspicion they might follow us here.
@caffeneko why not write an automatic code for all social users to be content moderators, if a post is flagged by 10 or more users as inappropriate then the post must be automatically deleted and repeat offenders must be automatically deactivated after 5 incidents. Let the community moderate itself.
@caffeneko @Cifa Lets not go into the algorithm system. One of the things I like here is, that it’s real people managing stuff. Instances will probably not grow beyond a size where the admin/owner can’t handle the moderation load anymore.
Report offenders, and let admins do their work. If you don’t like what they do, move to another instance.
Trolls will be here too. Blocking them and/or their instances means less chance to for them to influence the timelines.
@caffeneko I’ve bookmarked this as well so I know what to do if I spot an issue.
@caffeneko I haven't come across any of these people yet. Everyone has been lovely! I think any fascists on this platform will stick out like a sore thumb. Hopefully they are as sick of the fighting as we are and go to parlor or truth social or the other right wing spots
@caffeneko I'll try to remember! I didn't post anything about Mastodon on Twitter tho.
@RogueNana @caffeneko Same. I left. I didn't tell anyone where I was going.
@SamWolk @RogueNana Probably smart. I flounced loudly for weeks.
@caffeneko Question. Can users block entire servers on Mastodon? If that's possible, then the trolls can be isolated. And it would make a great story
@DanaBlankenhorn @caffeneko yes, I believe you can, at least from the web browser. This problem isn’t new with the Twitter exodus. Mastodon had entire Nazi/fascist servers a few years ago. They may still be around but everyone else has blocked them.

@DanaBlankenhorn @caffeneko

I just checked. You can do it if you're logged in through a web browser. Not sure how to do it on the official app (or if it is even possible).

@rmacanthony @caffeneko I was really wondering whether since it's federated, trolls could be isolated from decent people by servers blocking any servers which host them.
@DanaBlankenhorn @caffeneko Yes, that's exactly what has been done in the past. Those servers can be completely isolated from the rest of the fediverse.
@caffeneko Just a small heads up, many people consider calling oneself an expat a red flag, in any context.
@ainmosni I am seeing that. In the states some complain if white person co-opts the term 'migrant' or 'refugee.' I figured ex-pat would be fairly neutral, I guess that was wrong.
