“Fun fact: #SimCity was forced to pretend that all parking lots were underground because the game would be really boring if it was proportional in terms of parking lots.”

Boring like too many real places ruined by too much parking?

We Should Be Building Cities for People, Not Cars

The way we live is shaped by our infrastructure—the public spaces, building codes, and utilities that serve a city or region. It can act as the foundation for thriving communities, but it can also establish unhealthy patterns when designed poorly.For...

@BrentToderian I love that france just passed a law that any parking lot 80 spots or bigger HAS to install solar panels. It's just such a stupid-sensible solution...energy, AND shade, AND protection from snow/rain??
@toplesstopics @BrentToderian Hush now. Can't be goin' round npw making things efficient.
@BrentToderian That's what I think is cool with #cities:skylines: Cars actually park in streets and designated parking spaces. Probably not really to scale, because the games traffic is hard to handle as it is.

@Impactsuspect @BrentToderian Not at all to scale -- if you build an American big-box store with parking to scale, it will be relatively deserted. It only models every 4h person, to start with.

But then, C:S does have walking, public transport, and cycling as valid alternatives, it doesn't force you to create SC/American hellscapes.

@Impactsuspect @BrentToderian the game also has people using pocket-cars. Cars they can just pop out whenever.
Way way better than SimCity, but not all they there. :)
@BrentToderian The 'pocket cars' phenomenon in Cities Skylines isn't much better. Really wish they'd fix it but from what I can gather it's built into the engine's core code (not an easy fix). Pity, because I've had some success with reducing vehicles with shrewd design and good public transport options :)
@BrentToderian I played that game when it was new; I made a town with no roads but lots of rail transit. My town was swimming in money.
@BrentToderian in City Skylines you can extend the game with a real parking AI. Then you have to flatten half your town or improve public transport and biking. Oh and decentralization of infrastructure does wonders with the traffic. But its just a game. That would never work 😉
@BrentToderian Once you see all the parking, you cannot unsee it. I live in a small community and the amount of parking provided is astounding.
@BrentToderian in SimCity 1 you could build only railways and no roads at all. The citizen complained, but it was offset by having no traffic jams and less pollution 😎
@BrentToderian Donostia (San Sebastian) and Guanajuato are two cities that have done this IRL
