@ChiefGenealogist Washington Island, WI: Stavkirke is a church based on drawings of the one built in Borgund, Norway in 1150 AD. We happened upon it while hiking. When I saw your photos, I knew this had to be the church it was modeled after. Thank you!! The following is a photo I took in WIsconsin:

@ChiefGenealogist amazing. :) what the pictures can't show is how these churches smell - we visited the one at the folk museum in oslo this year and it has an unreal smell of tar and pine, like nothing else i've experienced.
