Does anyone know how to do the equivalent of quote-tweeting on Mastodon? Is it not possible or am I just a moron?
@benjaminwittes It's not possible, by design.
@StefanieSand what is the design logic of that?
@StefanieSand @benjaminwittes most quote tweets on the blue app are dunk Tweeting that bring harassment: even though some are positive
@ewarrenfan @StefanieSand i see. It’s a minor problem for me as it’s the way I footstomp agreement with something: quotetweet it with the word, “Word.”
@benjaminwittes @ewarrenfan @StefanieSand it’s not quite the same, but you can reply with “word”. People will see it but need to click on it to see the context.
@benjaminwittes @ewarrenfan @StefanieSand Could you just boost it and comment “word” on the original post? Wondering if that would show as connected on this platform.
@ewarrenfan @benjaminwittes @inallmyglori @StefanieSand Or copy the link, and put out a new toot: Word, and paste the link
@ewarrenfan @benjaminwittes @StefanieSand you can get the link to the toot and just append it at the end of your quote toot. this is somewhat equivalent to what twitter was doing anyway.
@dml @ewarrenfan @benjaminwittes @StefanieSand
That would be great if when I clicked on the link the thread showed up in my feed. Instead it opens it in a new tab. I know it's a minor thing, but it's annoying. Also, you don't get a preview in your feed so you actually have to click on the link to see what it is about (unless the poster supplies sufficient context). I get the problem w/ dunking, but it sure was convenient to see those QTs.
@StefanieSand @benjaminwittes @smpaley @ewarrenfan definitely agree! i suspect we’ll see some better UI around this eventually. A lot of twitter’s features were inspired by things the community wanted. For example retweets were implemented because users were putting “RT” before a message and amplifying it manually. A big help wanted sign
@StefanieSand @benjaminwittes mastodon is not Twitter. 😀
@YurkshireLad @StefanieSand i am aware of this—but still learning my way around the differences.
@StefanieSand @benjaminwittes yeah it does feel a bit weird, but it clicked for me after a little while.
@benjaminwittes @YurkshireLad @StefanieSand I don't love it either but I imagine I'll eventually get used to it 🤷🏻‍♂️
@StefanieSand @benjaminwittes @cdliverpool give it time and hopefully you’ll enjoy it more.
@benjaminwittes @YurkshireLad @StefanieSand I am glad you are here. One of my favorite follows from the blue bird thing

@benjaminwittes @YurkshireLad @StefanieSand

And I'm learning by following you lot. It is pretty different--definitely requires a different 'mental model'.

@benjaminwittes I'm no expert on this, but I believe the rationale is that quote tweeting leads to toxicity.
@benjaminwittes @StefanieSand Quote tweeting (supposedly) discourages conversation and encourages pile ons.
@StefanieSand @mknz @benjaminwittes I think your “supposedly” reference sums up my point, but it appears to me that replies can just as easily be toxic or end up as a pile on as a quote Tweet.
@mknz @benjaminwittes @StefanieSand That's not the way @benjaminwittes and I and others usually use quote-tweeting. Mostly it's for me it's "this is a great thread, read it" or "here's some background on this thing I'm talking about" or trying to connect two or more threads by other people together and add some analysis of my own about the connection.
@PhD_Frog @StefanieSand @benjaminwittes I think quote-tweets are useful.
I wouldn’t be surprised if this and some other content restrictions were not post hoc responses to technical challenges in implementing them. Full-text search, for example, is likely expensive in a federated system.
@benjaminwittes @StefanieSand
It help prevent cyberbullying. It's the culture here and a good decision.
@benjaminwittes @StefanieSand the justification for omitting that feature that I've heard is that it tends to encourage people to spitefully dunk on each other instead of engage more meaningfully and thoughtfully. I'm not 100% sold on that idea, but that's their decision.
As @benjaminwittes said: Does anyone know how to do the equivalent of quote-tweeting on Mastodon? Is it not possible or am I just a moron?
You have to copy, paste and attribute. It takes a minute but it’s good to slow down.
