For those new to mastodon...

There is no algorithm there. (for better or worse, mostly better)

Boosts are the *only* way that a post will get more visibility.

Bookmarks = I'd like to find this again in the future

Star/favorite = I read this, and it didn't suck.

Boost = more people should see this.

Use bookmarks!

The (nonexistent) algorithm isn't going to show you follow-up replies to a post you liked/boosted. You have to be in the reply chain to get notifications, so bookmark posts if you want to look back later at other replies to a post

@zebpalmer bookmarking must only be an option using a browser, not the app, right?
@LisaBostaph some apps have it, apparently, some don't?
@zebpalmer got it. I can’t find it on the Mastodon one. I’m gonna have to start using my laptop for this stuff.

@LisaBostaph @zebpalmer It looks like bookmarks are currently at least in test versions of the iOS "official" app: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/109356239312833647

Not sure when they'll get into the standard versions.

@LisaBostaph @zebpalmer depends on the app, in Metatext on iOS it’s under the … menu on a post unfortunately so not quite an easy click
@zebpalmer If only I knew how, if only Mastodon for Android app showed the option to bookmark. Ah, well. It'll keep me from spending too much time on the threads ... such as they might be.
@BlueKat fwiw, I use tusky on android. I _think_ that's the most popular & full-featured client for us.
@zebpalmer I can’t find bookmark on the app only when I’m accessing it from my browser. Help!!!

@zebpalmer sudden realization.

Twitter communities are exactly like this. The only difference is that at least we can kinda search for posts on mastodon. Twitter Communities didn't have search.

@zebpalmer Another #tip I saw was to #hashtags liberally. It helps with #search.
Zeb Palmer (@[email protected])

Another #mastodon tip! Mastodon #search functionality is purposely limited. If you want to engage with people on a topic, use #hashtags, like the old days of the #birdsite, throw the # on any relevant topic #keyword in your posts. this will help others find your #content If you don't want to engage with more people on something, don't. and, if you really want to keep interactions limited, you can always change the post visibility settings to "followers only"

Serenity Social
@zebpalmer yes similar but it was on my first profile. It had some other tips but I don't remember them.
@zebpalmer “I read this and it didn’t suck” 🤣🤣🤣
@zebpalmer Thank you! Just bookmarked for future ref, and boosting next!
@zebpalmer
Brilliant. So I favorited it (it didn't suck!), bookmarked it (even though I think I can remember this much) and boosted it.
@zebpalmer I have ‘reblog’ and ‘favourite’ as the options. Will try to see where boost and bookmarks are (maybe a limitation of my app?)
@VengefulArzt so... *right* after I posted that, mastodon released an update that renamed "boost" to "reblog" -- you'll see a mix of both though as some server admins have chosen to stick with the old terms

@zebpalmer 👍I have the Mastodon app, but found that not all apps have all features (‘Federated’ feeds from other servers - isn’t on the official app - but is on this new one!

Apparently DMs aren’t the same - will explore that too!

@zebpalmer Bookmark?! How?
@CZLLLaughs via the website it's the little bookmark looking icon.
in the apps, it should be similar but some of the apps may not support that. I recommend Metatext on ios and Tusky on android. (I think they both have it)

@zebpalmer

Yes, exactly. Your post points out, correctly, that boosting is the only way to increase a post's visibility.

I'd like to point out one thing explicitly for newcomers accustomed to other platforms that count and display likes/stars for everyone to see. Mastodon doesn't work that way. A like/star is only visible to you and the poster. Nobody else knows that you clicked the like/star. As stated in the OP, boosting is the ONLY way to increase visibility.

@zebpalmer I have trouble understanding "more visibility".

I mean: when I pull up the fediverse timeline, or my local instance timeline ... I expect to see *everything* (unless a poster has hidden it) ... since there is no algorithm filtering/prioritising posts.

So how can anything be *more* visible? 🤔

Can you help me understand what is not visible? So I can use this platform well.
Thanks. :-)

@deborahh the federated timeline contains posts by accounts that other people on your server are following. It doesn't show stuff from people your server doesn't know about. Thus, it's not everything -- though it's still quite a firehose on an active server.

But if someone you follow boosts something, it shows up in your main/home feed making it more visible to you.

@zebpalmer I also need a button for I read this, and it really sucked...
@zebpalmer I only have 2 followers… I’m invisible at that point. Boosting.
@zebpalmer star = boost + bookmark ?
@WuMing2 no, star is just feedback to the author. it has no other functionality.
But starred posts belong to a Favorites list just above Bookmarks. On web UI.
@zebpalmer Well, Hashtags are to be found and seen. Boosts will in the long run result into flodding your followers timeline with the same content over and over again.
You can follow here hashtag. By switch to the extended webinterface, you can add additional timelines for Hashtags. So you do not need to follow everyone, instead let the content come to you. 🤓
@tinoeberl your client should be hiding boosted content that you've already seen recently.
@zebpalmer Works obviously only when same boosts appear fast after another. Bigger time gaps are not detected. But I don't know how it works exactly.
@zebpalmer I don’t see a bookmark tool on Mastonaut.
@LBridgman yeah, apparently a few of the clients don't have it yet.
@zebpalmer Whats a bookmark?

@Covok check the other replies to my post. Apparently, some apps/clients don't support bookmarks yet or hide the functionality.

But it's just what the name implies, a way to mark a post so that you can find it later.

@zebpalmer It appears not to be on the official Mastodon app but its on Tusky.
@zebpalmer Thank you for explaining this! I was very confused as to why it labeled 'Favorite'. I guess 'Like' is too similar to the algorithm sites

@zebpalmer and yet what you describe is an algorithm.

The result is predictable and understandable but it is an algorithm.

@PierreSelim it's not what people think of as an algorithm, so no use in confusing people. The point is, no mysterious computer program that no one understands is picking and choosing what content you see, trying to boost your engagement.
@zebpalmer I dont like the way you present it because it gives credit to the narrative: algorithms are bad.
