Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it becomes more popular than the birdsite.
@richieholland
'I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.' (HAL 9000)
If another - clearly - viable alternative (BlueSky?) turned up, then I could imagine migrating again.
Here, I feel a bit like a refugee who has arrived in Kent on a dinghy.
The reception here has not felt warm, and generally I'm just hanging out with people I knew from - the other place.
@richieholland On Twatter it was totally normal (for me) to challenge people's posts - often humourously - without it ending in an argument or a block.
It's just debate.
But that - feels - frowned upon here. Hopefully I've misunderstood.
#TwitterMigration
@philwaring there's a slot of people trying set standards, even the founder debates Elon Musk's ideas of free speech. Not sure what you are seeing... šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
@richieholland It's not about 'standards' or rules.
It's about the culture.
Any kind of disagreements seem to be frowned upon here.
Mastodon feels more like an early version of Facebook - before it got infiltrated by the RW trolls.
I can't really describe it better than I did in the Toot to which you are replying.
Twitter was the only Social Media site that I had ever joined.
*Because* of the politics and the debates.
@philwaring I got suspended by Lexiters on Twitter because of "politics and debates. That happens here, there's talk of a FBPE server being set up. Where people can debate, who has frowned on you on Mastondon. The culture is open to what you want it to be.
@philwaring @richieholland You might try joining a different Mastodon instance. There are definitely different cultures on different instances, so you might find more of what you're looking for elsewhere. When I scroll through the Federated feed, sometimes I see toots that are more like what you seem to be looking for. FWIW instances.social is a wizard that purports to find more niche instances, might try that?
@danlharp @richieholland I haven't had any problems specifically from my instance - which is actually very easy going. Any negative feedback has come from a variety of instances.
But at the end of the day, it's almost certainly down to me.
I *like* the cut and thrust of politics.
(And I'm also not a cat person!)
@philwaring @danlharp the cut and thrust on Twitter is that it's run by a Far Right Fascist.
@danlharp hi, can you say a little more about instances.social and how to use it to find out more? Thanks!

@Malcriada instances.social is an online database of Mastodon instances. You can sort the database by language, no. of users, etc. But it appears that they've changed the sorting filters in the past few days so that the database is more difficult to use. I would no longer recommend it.

Instead, try https://mastodon.help/instances/en

Mastodon instances

@philwaring @richieholland seems too strong to me to say that disagreeing is frowned upon. It is more about doing so nicely and without toxicity
@jesseliberty @richieholland
Most of my negative interactions on (the other place) were with those types of accounts who don't exist here - eg bots/trolls/bigots/racists etc.
Which is brilliant. šŸ‘
So I am *far* less likely to get into arguements on Mastodon.
But I have also only ever used social media to discuss politics - never having joined FB, Insta, TikTok etc.
@jesseliberty @richieholland
Here on Mastodon, it feels like a refuge from politics.
But my problem is that I *want* to discuss politics.
I'm a newsaholic!
And when Twatter dies, where are people like me supposed to go?
If not to Mastodon?

@philwaring
I see Mastodon as a refuge from the kind of vile, misinformed, unplesant politics one finds on Twitter.

But I don't really know, as the people I follow don't talk politics, they talk technology and writing.

What is nice, though, is that people are cautious about what they say and how they say it and if what they are going to say is potentially offensive or triggering they put it behind a wall.

So maybe we're in violent agreement.

@jesseliberty "Violent?!"
I'm not that kind of guy...!
@philwaring @richieholland I enjoy Twitter because I avoid politics like the plague. I find that it's much more difficult to avoid politics on Mastodon.

@philwaring @richieholland It's all about finding the right instance. I think lol is intended as a progressive safe space, so people there may not be keen to discuss (let alone debate) politics. On mindly, anything political is supposed to go behind a CW.

There will be instances that cater to those looking for a frank exchange of views, but finding them might not be all that easy just yet.

@kennykravitz @richieholland
My understanding of this instance (@mastodon.lol) is that it is mainly aimed at my community, the #LGBTQI+ family. So discussion of gender politics is kind of built in here.
But today's far-right nowadays - be that Trump in the US, or Putin, Orban, or the governments of Poland and the UK over here in Europe - are dragging us unwillingly back into the political spotlight.
To put a CW on a discussion of my #humanrights feels uncomfortable.
@philwaring @richieholland Twitter is a very confrontational space, it sets you up to argue with people who it's blessed algorithm conjures up on your timeline. It increasingly felt like a battle space. Hopefully this will be different
@dattydee @richieholland
This wasn't my experience.
But maybe that was because of my (almost uncanny šŸ˜‰) ability to rapidly identify - and block - bots/trolls/morons and fascists.
So I've had quite a positive experience.
My main problem with Twatter is it's new owner - and his intentions.
@dattydee @philwaring @richieholland Block early block often always worked for me. I had a very friendly Twitter corner
@philwaring @richieholland I miss feeling like I was in a network that could potentially connect all of it - ā€œ the next evolution is just a tweet awayā€ā€¦ now it just feels like I’m in a cardboard box within a warehouse as opposed to a walk on part in the war… and I’m open to user error allways
@kristfist @richieholland
100%!
I feel guilty questioning the prevailing Mastodon culture, which feels (to me) like politics - and disagreements about politics - are frowned upon.
Long-term Mastodon users seem to see Twltter as a battlefield - yet that wasn't my experience.
Yes, there were lots of bots & trolls - but it was easy to block them.
And so have some great interactions.
@philwaring @richieholland isn’t the joke about politics: happens when more than two people are in a room? I revitalized my bird account because DonnieJohn made it a relevant platform, and I actually wanted to join the churl tag my verified representatives/elected officials (oh, the antiquated horror of contacting them the traditional way phone /seven step email form ) #laststraw for the bird when musky rescinded WFH w/a 24 hour notice or you’re fired. #myspace 4ever

@philwaring @richieholland When I joined Mastodon I was constantly told how friendly and welcoming it it. But that has not been my experience. Mastodon seems like a rather angry place.

And the level of functionality on Mastodon is very very poor. If you come to Mastodon hoping to meet people who share your interests you're out of luck. There is simply no way you will be able to find those people.

@richieholland

Nah, if it stays nice, interesting and civil here, y’all are stuck with me.

@richieholland I’m here because it’s FOSS. Still plan on using Twitter. I don’t see the same things you all do, so Twitter is actually great for me and I genuinely think Elon will do great things with it, at least try to.
@richieholland I just don’t seem to get many responses to anything right now.
@Julie2oftheNetherlandsandUK @richieholland Hi Julie. I found that there's more interaction here generally than on Twitter but there can be quiet times too. If you put up an introduction and a few #s you might get more engagement. Depends on what you're after really.
@Julie2oftheNetherlandsandUK it takes a while just keep following people you want to interact with. It was like that for me for ages on the bird site years ago.
@richieholland I'd probably leave if it became as popular as the birdsite!
@richieholland I came here to create a "parachute" dependant on how things go on Twitter but despite a largish following there, I much prefer it here and hope I can make this my primary place and help to grow it within, what seems so far, to be a more mature community.
@richieholland Excuse my ignorance, we've only started a mastodon instance recently. To me mastodon is a platform/software and not the community. The community is made by those running the instance. Mastodon as a whole? Honestly, after a few days running I don't feel welcome on mastodon as a whole and I see that I really have to start using filters and block list to keep my customers and community safe from people on some of the largest instances even.
@Chris good luck with your instance.
@richieholland kind of liking it already (1 week). Will hang around
@richieholland Mastodon isn't a replacement for Twitter anymore than Instagram is. It's an alternative to Twitter, and that's valuable in and of itself.
@DancesWithCybermen it's a replacement for me, as twitter wrongly suspended me and put me on a black list.
@richieholland I don't think it matters how popular - it is increasing in popularity and is now quite popular anyway. It is much nicer here - I litteraly glance and the birdapp for a few seconds a day but happy to not spend much time there and if it disappears, so be it.
@richieholland I've already found enough good people here, I'm sticking around!
@richieholland I didn't come b/c I thought it was likely to become more popular than BirbSite - I had been having issues over there for a while. What I am finding is that engagement is much better here. I'm at <10% of my follower count and still getting a decent amount of interaction. That's pretty amazing.
@richieholland I actually start to like it better. Missing the quote retweets though :)
@dngb @richieholland
When I opened the post, I saw yours, and Richie's, so in effect, replying to a post *IS* "quote tweeting." Kinda.
@dngb @richieholland Quote tweets are probably all I miss. I’ll stay as long as there’s engagement.
@richieholland imma say yes. Love the vibes in the jawns.club!
@richieholland it’s not a matter of popularity. My timeline here is full of topics of my interest, not someone’s else interest as in the other site.
@lmp @richieholland Actually getting to see what people I follow are posting is pretty great.
@richieholland absolutely, it's a different world, so civilised
@richieholland oh i ain't moving twitter can kiss my shiny butt, i like it here.
@richieholland
I was looking for the right moment to jump ship, and I brought friends with me. We're not leaving anytime soon.

@richieholland I really appreciate that there’s no algorithm here. The bird seems like it pushes nothing but negativity, anger, outrage.

I managed to make myself a little happy peaceful autistic bubble there, but it took a lot of muting many accounts.

Seems like people here are more chill and there’s no algorithm shoving negativity in our faces to make money. People don’t respond to that stuff here.

I’m glad I came to Mastodon. I like it here a lot better.

@richieholland Is boosting a toot one of those double arrow swirly thingamabobs? If so, consider it done. If not, I might have pulled an Elon and screwed up the entire social network.
@milesshapiro1 @richieholland Depends what app you’re on just to add to the confusion :D
