“I think we [journalists] got lazy as a field, and we let Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, and, god help us, Elon Musk and their staff decide all these major journalistic questions.”

I couldn’t agree more with journalist @adamdavidson in this thoughtful and reflective Q&A about joining #Mastodon

Mastodon’s Moment – The Markup

A conversation with Adam Davidson

@Sheril @adamdavidson this is very true, how much tv and paper coverage the past 10 years has beeb reacting to trends on twitter? If the medium is the message, then whats the algorithm that controls the medium. Any medium will have these effects, but the AI enabled streams like twitter, facebook, google take out so much of the legwork snd validation and hide it. your left reporting on the results of a model. less filtering, more research.
@Sheril @adamdavidson Now we will have to see if journa.host represents only journalists "moving" from Twitter to Mastodon, or them *migrating* there. How will they handle both-sidesing, and granting undeserved credibility to all sorts of reality denial under the 'just reporting' excuse.
@Sheril @adamdavidson You forgot to mention Rupert Murdoch.

@Sheril @adamdavidson I really liked this quote in the article: "What I’m finding most satisfying about Mastodon, and I’m seeing a lot of other journalists feel this, is that it actually forces you to ask and confront some of these questions and to make active choices. "

Making active choices is exactly what mastodon forces us all to do. I like that about it. #Intentionality is a good thing, I think.

@Sheril it’s all about marketing budget and tam. Without audience a journalist doesn’t have a job. Just a passion.

how to make a clean tw exit without leaving too much residual data

@Sheril @adamdavidson

Once we understand that #mastodon is not set up - like #twitter - for any kind of “Oh my god, everybody’s talking about this one post" but rather to foster #conversations, the comparisons between twitter and mastodon will vanish...

@Sheril @adamdavidson certainly the search for clicks and hot takes is one factor but also needing chaos actors to distill attention to your platform .. just ugh.
@Sheril @adamdavidson Absolutely. And of course journalists collaborated in this, because the platforms uniquely exploit our vulnerabilities
