iPhone tooters of Mastodon! Yes we have figured out by now that #MetaText is the early leader in phone clients. However, I do encourage you to have all the clients installed and try them out as updates are happening. I’ve turned notifications of on all but one, but the official Mastodon iPhone client just got a nice update. Has a news tab. Tooot (3 o’s) has been getting updated lately as well. Choice is good! Mix it up and don’t be afraid to have several secondaries installed and revisit them.
Currently #MetaText is my main, but I’m using Tooot, Toot! (Pink with cool animations,) MasToot, and Mast. #iphone #mastodon
@shanselman Toot! asking £3.49 after 30 reviews and tough competition is brave
@shanselman But have done it out of curiousity…
@shanselman I've tried using Tooot, MetaText and Mastoot on #iphone out of the 3 I find MetaText the best for display but if playing linked media MetaText seems to take you to the link whereas Mastoot plays media within app.
@shanselman no love for Android 😭
@davidebbo @shanselman I like Tusky on Android, although the landscape tablet interface is not great.
@ericcosta @shanselman Just installed it, thanks. So far, I only used the default Mastodon app.
@shanselman MetaText on iOS, Tusky on Android.
@shanselman is MetaText laggy a bit on everyone’s iPhones or is it just mine?
@harunlegoz may be your server?
@shanselman may be, but feels more like a rendering issue/lag when scrolling. I’ll try it further though. It’s a shame official Mastodon app doesn’t have Local Feed feature, I like it.
@shanselman I really like Toot!, and hope the developer will continue it. It’s been a year since a release, but it works as it is, and is quite whimsical.
@shanselman #metatex lags scroll as f*, and animations are kind of weird, I think the best experience so far is the official #mastodonapp but it lacks of some features, like handling lists and follow tags
@shanselman I just downloaded #MetaText and love the Twitter feel to it, and the tabs are a nice addition. Yet to try the others but so far this ranks top.
@shanselman As soon as someone finds a client (mobile and desktop) which remembers the last read toot and starts the timeline there, please let me know.

@stefankoell @shanselman
I would be willing to pay (checks pockets) $21.70 and a 25% chipotle discount for the first person to rebuild tweetdeck for mastodon...

Probably more... once I check the sofa cushions.

@venzann @stefankoell on the web on desktop, turn on Advanced Web Interface and you’re 90% of the way there. On iPad, the older Mast app is effectively Tweetdeck for iPad.
@venzann @shanselman I can highly recommend Metatext as an iOS client. Feature rich and very responsive.
@stefankoell @venzann @shanselman I’m hoping Tapbots will build something like TweetBot for iOS and MacOS. I bought TweetBot years ago and it’s one of the main reasons I’ve been able to stomach all the changes to the *other site* over the years.
@stefankoell @shanselman And keeps you there when you expand new tweets!

@stefankoell @shanselman the Mastodon API has supported this since ca. 3.0. (It calls these “markers”.)

I *believe* the regular web app sets and reads them. I haven’t found anything else that does.

(I’ve started implementing it in a macOS client. And here’s a feature request for it in an iOS app: https://feedback.mastoot.app/feature-requests/p/timeline-position-syncing)

Timeline Position Syncing | Voters | Mastoot

@shanselman @chucker Thanks, Sören! I know about the API but I can't really say that the web client is using this. For me this doesn't seem to work (or I don't know how to use it). I often change machines/browsers, so it's always a struggle. iOS client which honors the markers would also be nice.

@stefankoell @shanselman
the Mastodon API allows to save markers with the position, and share it across apps/devices

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/markers/

Too bad most clients don't use it (maybe they just don't know it exists)

Save and restore your position in timelines.

@stefankoell
@apps do this on #Android. It can also fill in gaps in the timeline by pushing new posts up and preserve your timeline position. Would like a synchronization across devices though.
@shanselman
@stefankoell @shanselman Oh, yes, *please*! I so hate the permanent reload of the timeline after every short absence.
@stefankoell @shanselman Whalebird does this. 🙂

@stefankoell @shanselman: Curious. My timeline always starts from the last read and I scroll up instead of down.

Don’t think I’m doing anything special there.

Is this not the experience of others?

@itsjoshbruce @shanselman I'm honestly not sure if that's the case. I will observe but I quite often switch devices (several desktop and mobile devices) and it's a pain to find the last read toot. It definitely doesn't sync across devices.

@stefankoell @shanselman: Agree on it not syncing across devices or apps.

For me, when I see the "20 new posts" or whatever the number is, it sticks to last read and loads the new stuff above without scrolling to the top, which I appreciate.

@stefankoell @shanselman It appears @paul started working on Tweetbot for Mastodon which might become the client to look out for considering the quality and polish of Tweetbot.
@stefankoell @shanselman Tusky (Android) might have that soon if we're lucky https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/issues/2788
Timeline improvements · Issue #2788 · tuskyapp/Tusky

This issue is for collecting the various wishes users have about timelines. This way we can think about them together. Patching single issues will lead us nowhere. For some users the current timeli...

‎Mastoot

‎Mastoot is a simple client app for Mastodon. Features: • Home • Notifications • Explore • Search • Local timeline • Federated timeline • Messages • Favorites • Bookmarks

App Store
@stefankoell Have you tried activating „Slow mode“ in „Preferences > Appearance“? If you do, the timeline is not updated automatically anymore.
@shanselman been trying mammoth (beta) and it’s good too :) https://testflight.apple.com/join/66c1wW8y
Join the Mammoth: for Mastodon beta

Available on iOS

@arnaudlimbourg yep I've got that one also. Oddly it's from the Mast author (abandoned 2 years ago) so it's unclear why he's rebooting
@shanselman oh! Was not aware. (What I really want is tweetbot though)
@shanselman I’ve tried them all and keep going back to “Toot!”
@ramsey @shanselman same. in part because it’s the most fun, but also in part because its threading view is best
@shanselman I’m quite enjoying using #MetaText on my Mac as well. Straight up download for M1 machines…
@shanselman main app doesn’t have Federated/Local timelines 😢 (just updated and don’t see the News tab!)
@mehulkar @shanselman they are there! Just hidden a bit. If you go to the search page there are sub-tabs, one is community (local feed) and one is the federated feed!
@mariah @shanselman oh interesting. Which one is Federated? I see the Community one!
@mehulkar @shanselman hmm maybe I was wrong about that, I can't find it now... but I was able to find it somewhere!
@shanselman I would really love them to add a follower maintenance feature to show which of your followers you are not following back - (and ideally a flag so you can ignore ones that you have no intention of following back)
@shanselman I’ve tried a lot of the apps, but keep going back to the web app. Just like it the most and it seems to be the most feature complete
@shanselman hey Scott! Remember Base Camp in Sioux City a long time ago?
@shanselman iPhone user here and so far I like the official app the best.
