UPDATE: Mastodon accounts: 7,133,516 (estimate)

* 5,451 in the last hour
* 238,181 in the last day
* 548,368 in the last week

After a crazy jump all day today, it looks like sign-up are finally calming down to ~5,000/hour. Which is still a stunning amount of new users.

We (the Fediverse) need lots of funding to onboard these new users so donate to the admins of your instance as well as the Mastodon project. https://www.patreon.com/mastodon

NOTE: Will be actively blocking all concern trolls who reply.

@atomicpoet It'll pick up again over the weekend. $2 a month sounds like a bargain to me!
@AlgoCompSynth @atomicpoet especially when the checkmark was $8 and it was going to a corporation, that is a steal that’s is worth it
@atomicpoet well done! You guys are absolutely crushing it!
@shojo When I say "we" I mean the royal "we" -- all of us.
@atomicpoet you guys as in all of y’all, collectively are crushing it…royally!

@atomicpoet wait, isn't the royal we the one that means I, and the author's we (pluralis modestiae) the one that means everybody?

@shojo

@oblomov @shojo I don't know right now. My brain is broke. I mean collective we.

@atomicpoet

@JudyHelfrich

Is there a hashtag we can use to spread the word to donate?

@atomicpoet how do you find out who your moderators are

@atomicpoet I’m not entirely sure what concern-trolling is, but lil’ servers and their tireless admins need love, too. 😀

#TossACoinToYourServerAdmin

@quay Concern trolling is when people throw mud at an initiative under the guise of concern.

Example: "The Fediverse would be an amazing thing to build but corporations will just hijack it in the end."

@quay @atomicpoet
What a great term.
Sort of like the creation end of doom scrolling.
@atomicpoet @quay thanks! I never knew what that kind of comment was, just that it annoyed me to no end!
@atomicpoet @quay dang, didn't know there was a term for that.
@atomicpoet Am grateful for the open registration servers for taking the load, honestly.
@atomicpoet I can't donate yet though -- not in good financial situation for now. But I'm grateful to anyone who donates. Will boost.
@atomicpoet Thanks. I was just looking for payment information.
@atomicpoet I’m very new to all of this. What is a “concern troll?”
@ghostpants I've explained it elsewhere in this thread.
@atomicpoet Hopefully the fediverse will continue to grow (albeit at a more manageable rate), even without major sources of centralization collapsing like with how Twitter's going.
Mastodon, Matrix, PeerTube, Funkwhale, etc, so many ways to take back your internet today.
@atomicpoet Chris, what amounts are hoped for? Any guidelines you can please offer to we the new members?
@atomicpoet donated.
But noticed you guys run out of gold tier… you might want to add some more availability and find some more generous donors
@atomicpoet you need more service providers to show up, opalstack.social is ready!

@atomicpoet

Just made an annual donation. Thanks for all the work you guys do to make this a fantastic place!

@atomicpoet you must be getting that a lot, but i haven't figured it out: how do you generate those graphs? i know of the-federation.info that has some of that data, but the graphs don't look as pretty...
@Anarcat I'm getting it from another place that I *would* link to, but it happens to be at an instance that's unsavoury.
@atomicpoet can you share your methodology for estimating the 7 million?
https://mastodon.help/instances/en suggests just over 5 million

@pchiusano Nope, this is not methodology. It's data from a site I'm not linking to because I disagree with them on ideological grounds but nevertheless like their charts.

@atomicpoet @pchiusano would you be willing to share ghe grounds.

I'm pretty sure I know what they are and will agree with you based on their instance domain name.

@jonoabroad @pchiusano Sure, I'm not a fan of badly moderated instances with a focus on cryptocurrency.

@atomicpoet @pchiusano thank you, I am the least aware person in existence and unless it's in huge neon signage I don't notice obvious things.

I have missed some shockers.

@atomicpoet I think it’s kind of shady that you won’t share the source of the info you’re blasting out. Without a source, we can’t really say whether the way it was computed was legit. And it clearly wasn’t from a trustworthy source. I’m pretty skeptical of that 7 million number now.

Source code is in the bio of the user.
@73rdnemesio @atomicpoet I wonder what the 2 million discrepancy is…
So it looks like the bot pulls from the Instance list from https://instances.social/instances.json then gets the user count from the API of each of those instances. I’m assuming if an instance doesn’t respond it doesn’t delete the user count from the previous pull.

@pchiusano @atomicpoet it's from a bot

Let me find it for you

@atomicpoet @nathan Honestly i don't think there are many safe servers left after the popular ones shut there registrations.
