@mastodonmigration - Mastodon is cool tech and the Fediverse is awesome with so many interesting people, but this advertising that is it “like Twitter” is misleading and seems to be causing turmoil for longtime citizens of the Fediverse and culture shock for recent arrivals. Who is sponsoring/directing the advertising? Better slogan: “The Fediverse - it’s complicated” (and not in a technical sense!)

@Surreykiwi Currently yes. Most are grass roots funded by donations. Some generate a little extra which they share with others. In the future, academic institutions, governments and corporations may set up Mastodon instances so that they can own their own data, but it is still early days.

If you can support your instance please think about doing so. Most have a Patreon or other means of providing financial support. Look on the http:[instance name]/about page.

@mastodonmigration Political types like me are aware of Musk, Mastodon, etc. But I also follow sports, arts, local news, science, books, environmental, health etc etc. who are less looped in to what's happening. We need to encourage folks to cheer on their fave non-political accounts to come here.

Yes there is, epicure.social is an instance focused on foodies. However it looks like they accept signups manually but do give them a try!

You only need to create a single account on any of the servers and can start following anyone from any other server. It's a little like email in that regard.
