Me planning my new multi-monitor setup involving 2 monitors, 3 machines, 4 graphics cards, 2 displayport switches, 2 adapters and 8 cables.
And yes, this legitimately took me over an hour to work out and find the right equipment for.
@phryk this is just like my last adventure with Barrier. Good luck!

@ryancoordinator Barrier?

I got my planning all done and ordered everything. Currently designing a modular desk to go with it. πŸ˜‚

@phryk a software tool that allowed me to meld several computers into a single frankenputer when I couldn't afford a single box with enough ram for my whims.

There was a graph of the audio routing for OBS streaming I wanted to show you, but I'm having trouble locating it.

@ryancoordinator Hah, had to think "that sounds like the *real* next level for Synergy only to see it was actually forked from it. :D

And now I spent all night hacking up the obligatory open source modular desk with integrated cable management to go with this setup as parameterizable #OpenSCAD model because of course I fucking did.

All that's missing still are some rails to mechanically connect both desks as well as the drawer and 19" rack modules and the mountpoints for them.

And all the holes and pins to actually hold everything together… πŸ˜‚ 😭

I think I'mma call this thing deskTOP and modules for it SUB* because I can… 😈

@phryk Wait... OpenSCAD?

You have earned my respect

@optimal I love OpenSCAD – true parameterizable CAD. It definitely needs some more features, but it's still alive and kicking and seems to be seeing quite some movement lately.

I've also poured the THAM12 subwoofer design into it and got a little crazy there, too:

@optimal And yes, that's animated using nothing but $t. πŸ˜‚
@phryk Have you considered CADQuery?

@optimal Ah, *that* was the name of the python code-based CAD thing.

I wanted to look into it but forgot the name years ago already.

Current project is already too far along but I bookmarked and still want to look into it.

That said, with it being python I do have the nagging feeling that it'll be a worse solution longevity-wise.

CAD projects, I'd still like to be open-/renderable in 20 years and it'll take quite some convincing for me to believe something written in python can achieve that.

@phryk Looks exactly like my attempt to plan the network at home making use of several wifi access points, a switch, router, TV set top box, and trying to retrofit it to my existing in-wall network cables at home...

@michal The weird thing is that the depicted setup is wholly sensible (given the requirements and what hardware is available at reasonable prices) and I already ordered everything.

And then I began designing a custom desktop with integrated cable management to actually fit the whole shebang.

Not yet sure how affordable my desk design is gonna be, tho. :'D

@phryk @Gargron only 2 monitors? Come, join the dark side of the 4 monitor team!!

@kuon I'm way too poor for that.

Maybe in the long run – but I paid 500 bucks for all this stuff and that's already about 200 more than I can frivolously spend in any given month. ^^

That said, a portrait orientation display dedicated to monitoring would be a nice thing. :P

@Gargron

@phryk @Gargron ooh, it was more of a joke, I didn't want you to feel bad:)

@kuon Oh, I don't – at least not about this. :'D

It's already kinda unreal for me to spend 500 bucks on something so "frivolous" in a single month and I'm very much looking forward to having a proper multi-monitor setup again – and this time I'm trying out VA panels so I hopefully get better black reproduction than with the previous IPS displays I don't have anymore.

// @Gargron

@kuon

Honestly, this is kind of a major step for me to get back on track after finally coming out of homelessness, so I'm really glad it's actually happening. :)

// @Gargron

@phryk Lets no longer ignore the elephant in the Room. Why are you doing this to begin with? πŸ˜…

@K4mpfie because dual-screen is much more comfortable to work with, but i also have a server and a laptop and don't want to have to plug stuff around constantly.

Also my desktop currently has two graphics cards because FreeBSD doesn't yet support the new one I got.

Also ordered chinch and USB switches – so unless I change hardware I won't have to plug stuff around for anything anymore. :P

@phryk please stop
@Dashtop Too late. πŸ˜‚
@phryk oh no you're possessed
@Dashtop I skipped work twice this week because I got completely caught up in designing a desk to go along with this setup. πŸ˜‚
