For anyone who wants to help lighten the load on a Mastodon instance you're using (and perhaps make things snappier for yourself), consider enabling "slow mode" in your appearance settings.

It should seriously cut back on the number of requests the instance is having to fulfill for your browser.

In around a minute, there were 200 posts that would've been served to my browser.

At a minimum, that's another 200 requests for profile pictures that my Mastodon instance would have to respond to from my browser - and that's not including any photos or media included in those posts which would also have to be served as well.

@dominotree is there a way to do this in Tusky?
@dominotree
(And makes it so when you find a toot you like, it doesn't instantly take off down your feed with you chasing after it like an indoor cat that just got out.)
@rysiek
@dominotree Holy crap this is all I ever wanted for my feed anyway. It's like a win for everyone!

@dominotree or use pinafore.social

You have to click to see the newer posts

@dominotree I'm honestly kind of surprised slow mode is not the default.
@rysiek
@dominotree also makes it easier to consume local and especially federated timelines

@dominotree

I always used this by default anyway as it helps me keep my place better. Good to know my choice is helping 😊

@dominotree Thanks, I was looking for this option anyway; I dislike the auto update
@dominotree Yeah, i found i had to do exactly this however i wish there was a bit more control over it, i mentioned my thoughts about it here. https://mstdn.ca/@thelastdisciple/109368509360801533

Attached: 1 image There's gotta be a better way to manage bringing in new posts to timelines, i had to unpin my federated timeline because whether it was getting realtime updates or on slow mode's click-to-update it just goes bananas like this either way. Not to mention settings per feed would be great, maybe Home feed can be real time but local and federated updates a certain amount of posts every five minutes or something.

@dominotree a nice setting now that I'm following a lot more people and the volume of posts in my feeds has increased.
@dominotree It's also less like playing Tetris.
@dominotree I'm sorry, this is well-intentioned, but "slow mode" has no effect on the amount of requests your browser makes altogether.
@dominotree what it actually do and why is it a user setting? Can’t it be done by the admins?
@dominotree I'd have thought that should be the default for a server with more than three users any one of which had signed up more than three days ago.
initially misread that as "lighten the mood" but that still tracks
#Mastodon #slow
@dominotree 100% agree with this setting change! #metatext
