Remember, friends don’t let friends use the official Mastodon apps.

Get yourself Tusky for Android, or Metatext for iOS. Toot! Is also good for iOS.

Enjoy all the timelines and features.

@tabacco What’s up with the official iOS app?
@simeon it’s lacking a bunch of features. No access to the local/federated timeline is a big gap, for one.
@tabacco @simeon i#don’t On iOS, don’t I see the local timeline if I go to the search tab and scroll ove to ‘community’?
@tabacco or Subway Tooter for Android!
@tabacco I couldn't login w/ the official app – got stuck at authentication. No problem w/ Tusky at all – works like a charm.
@tabacco also Tooot because it has a funny name
@felixthepope true, though based on my sidekiq dead queue their push notification relay may be having issues.
@felixthepope Oops I lied, it's Tootle that I was thinking of. So many confusingly-similarly-named iOS apps.
@tabacco Honest question, what is the benefit of using an app for Mastodon instead of a browser?
@operaimmagine Push notifications would be one thing. Also, more OS-native UI. The web app is perfectly good though.
@tabacco Perfect, thank you. Notifications are the first thing I turn off for apps, I'll stick to the browser for now!
@tabacco no need for app. Just do it in a browser.
@tabacco - why? What's wrong with the Mastodon app? Maybe I'm just new to all of this...will check out Tusky.
@RoberMinorPoet It's missing a bunch of functionality. For one thing you can't see the local timeline with it, and that's arguably the best thing about Mastodon :)
@mjgardner The official app is missing a bunch of functionality. It can't even show the Local/Federated timelines.
@tabacco Thanks. I have the official app but can find med-mastadon on it when I search for that server, so I am only accessing via the web/browser. Am I missing something?
@Dweiner I'm not sure, sorry! I'd definitely try another app, though, they're almost universally better than the official one.
@tabacco Toot! for iOS version 16.0, last release a year ago (that's what the app store tells me). Is that app still actively maintained? I also see only 5 reviews in the app store, not much. So people using this app, please add some positive reviews if you like it. 😀 Will try it out! 👍🏻 #toot #ios #AppReview
@andregasser both it and Metatext were idle for a long time, but both projects’ maintainers popped in to say they’d be reviving them. Metatext already shipped a few minor updates, and Toot sounds like it will soon.
@tabacco That's super cool 😊 Already bought the app and currently exploring it 👍🏻
@tabacco Interesting, why not?
@jezbers It's lacking a lot of features relative to the third party apps, and doesn't support the Federated timeline. Even the Local timeline is hidden away.
@tabacco Ah OK, was suspecting something more sinister. The cynic in me 😂
@jezbers Oh, nothing like that (probably). I assume it'll improve with time and more resources, too. But for now other apps are just much nicer to use :)
@tabacco the official app is fine, i prefer it over fedlab on android.
@tabacco ???? The Mastodon app is bad?

@Ladyknightthebrave It's light on features, and makes it somewhere between hard and impossible to see the Local/Federated timelines, which are some of the better parts of Mastodon.

Just saying, it's worth trying another.

@tabacco Yeah, that’s kind of the point though. It’s light on features purposely. I like the simplicity.
@tabacco what is wrong with the Mastidon apps? I have just joined and downloaded that app!

@CarolOneill Nothing's wrong with it per se, but it's lacking in functionality and quality-of-life features compared to some of the third-party alternatives.

I'm not begrudging anyone who prefers it, but it's also easy to miss that there are alternatives that might be better :)

@tabacco I dunno... I use Tusky mostly, but sometimes what I want to do or check is just easier in the Mastodon app. 🤔
@tabacco thank you for this! The official Mastodon app is so strangely lacking in features.
@tabacco Whalebird seems to work just fine for iOS too.
@tabacco so should I invest in metatext or toot?
@tabacco Yes, Tusky has everything I need!
@tabacco why though? Seems to be good 😬
@jayarnold It's not bad per se, but it's lacking features compared to the third-party alternatives. It also buries the local timeline, which is arguably one of the better features of Mastodon.
@tabacco on you say so I already downloaded it thanks. The interface doesn’t look quite as elegant to me. But it does have DM and other features. Thanks so much! #mastanewbie
@tabacco I am on IPhone. Looked for Toot!, but got distracted by the next item listed as “Fart World” which has a menu for selecting everything from silent but deadly through to ones that will strip the paint off chairs.

@tabacco

From where?

@JBlake All of them are in their platforms' respective app stores.
@tabacco FINE, I'll do it, but not just because you said so.
@tabacco this was the toot I needed a week ago. Just switched to Metatext and it’s SO. MUCH. BETTER.
@tabacco Just gave Toot! another go. Local is great. Update added dark theme.
@tabacco I prefer the official app to metatext…..
@tabacco Thank you! Tusky is awesome 😁
