Have you ever wondered why Germans didn’t do anything about Hitler? Well, the rest of the world is wondering exactly that about Americans and Trump.

@Strandjunker

We, on the left, are too beholden to law and order... while the ones who demand law and order have little respect for it... that must change and quick.

@Strandjunker Trump is *not* Hitler, nor is modern-day U.S.A. the same as early 1930ies Germany. I don't want to apologize the misogynist, racist bigot at all, but the more are "literally Hitler", the less meaningful it becomes

@Strandjunker Trump is no longer the one to fear. He was damaging but incompetent, and his narcissism seems to ensure that nobody can leverage him to prevent that incompetence from being self-defeating. As happened with the US midterms, the Democrats were lucky that Trump was on the ballot in the form of dozens of MAGA endorsees. That’s why Dems weren’t demolished by a contracting, high inflation economy and a very unpopular Administration. By extension, I think the Dems might be lucky if somehow Trump was nominated again. But I’d only be slightly less shocked to see that happen than I was to see Trump win in 2016. Trump lost HUGE this year. I don’t see the Republican establishment giving him a third try.

I now fear those to whom Trump has shown the path to autocratic (or worse… fascist) power. I worry deSantis might be that threat. Happily, the American electorate seems to have agreed that the election denier would-be Secretaries of State and Governors, who wanted to establish states’ ability to reject the outcomes of their elections and submit their own slates of hand-selected electors, were a threat to democracy. Those were the races to watch.

Still plenty of danger to fight. But I worry a lot less about Trump today than I did on November 7th.

@Strandjunker We did. We voted. I worked my @$$ off texting for Biden, delivering yardsigns for Beto and local judges, and knocking on doors. Democracy was sorely tested, but it worked despite a lot of problems. But it's not over yet.
@Strandjunker truth be told.

@Strandjunker Andrea … too too ungentle … it just proves the claim that anyone (no matter how morally challenged) can become President … after all in 2018 Neva(die)dians elected a very dead pimp as their GOP State Senator. -I’d like to take comfort in the idea that it has been sheer mortification that, in recent years,has swung them to the Democrats. #drumpf #dennishof
@Strandjunker sometimes I wonder why we keep fighting for people like that. People whose grandfathers etc fought against tyranny. Do people want to be ruled by a king and dictator again? What a waste
@Strandjunker Hitler was elected. That's the tragedy
@norah @Strandjunker As we’re Trump and the succession of Tories! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ (oh! Not by me!)
@Strandjunker I didn't have to wonder. My mother, grandparents & family experienced the why & how, fortunately most left in the Nick of time...& warned us kids that it can & probably will happen again, as it has all throughout history.
@Strandjunker and UK government too, the rise of fascism is scary.
@Strandjunker And the entire GOP, if we're being honest.
@Strandjunker
Hopefully Gen Z generation will change it.

@Strandjunker In the past week, one Republican candidate has said that democracy doesn't work and the nation needs to abandon it. A far-right religious leader said the same thing and came right out and said the word, "dictator."

These guys are openly saying what a lot of Republican leaders are saying privately. They do not believe in democracy. They want to structure the political system in the US so that no Democrat can ever win office again. They do not want free elections, because Republicans don't win free elections.

In Georgia, the Republicans are trying to shut down Saturday voting — so that people who work on weekdays won't be able to vote. Add that to gerrymandering, vote-rigging, voter suppression, and all that crap about fraudulent stolen elections and their goal is to weaken and destroy the legitimacy of the most sacred ritual of democracy.

The Republican party has a fascist core. They're not even trying to hide it anymore. Charles and David Koch followed their father and spent mlilions pushing the Republican party rightward. It was their money that funded the "Tea Party" movement, which later evolved into the MAGA cult. 😡

@filmcritic @Strandjunker It's exactly the same in the UK with the Tories. And they are backed by the same shady Americans.
@Beulah @Strandjunker I’m in the U.K. so fully agree. I was a political journalist dealing with the US for a decade (guardian) so am heavily invested in US politics…so much so you thought I was 😜😂
@Strandjunker I’ve been saying that since June 2015 & I’m Canadian.
@Strandjunker you folks had Trump, we managed to…trump that with Boris and then Truss! It’s seems the far right can get away with wearing sheep’s clothing when everyone is simply trying to survive and they can’t decide who to be angry at!
@Strandjunker They actually put Hitler in jail but, for reasons I don't understand, let him out early.
@Strandjunker Quite a few Americans are wondering that, too.
@Strandjunker we voted him out of office. That’s a start.
@Strandjunker have you ever wondered what YOU would have done if you were in 1930's Germany as Hitler was rising to power..?
It's what you're doing now.
@Strandjunker Americans and Trump, Americans and DeSantis, Americans and Abbott, Americans and pretty much the entire Republican party....
@Strandjunker Not only about T$&&p, but also his Republican enablers!!! #lockhimup
