Fans of the remarkable Susan Cooper classic, “The Dark is Rising” have a real treat in store: BBC radio drama is set to start in a month. Script was adapted by a True Fan of the novel and it promises to be excellent. Here’s link to 6-minute promo. When they sing the “The Dark is Rising” poem at the end I literally got scalp-prickles. It’s PERFECT. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0dgrz83?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back…

@Kayray OOOOOOH.
@anniebeeknits are you a fan? Are you a fan?????!!?!!!
@Kayray I grew up reading and re-reading those books. This is on my bookcase right now.
@anniebeeknits me too, oh me too, and this one is my favorite of the five. I reread it every year at midwinter, or listen to my self-made audiobook which is here http://kayray.org/susan-cooper/ (still need to record Silver on the Tree)

@Kayray OOOOOOH. Thank you for the links!
@Kayray - this is an absolutely awesome & impressive endeavor. Bookmarked. Thanks.
@melissawiley @Kayray CANNOT WAIT. Read the entire series at our local library as a child – when the final book came out, my mother badgered them (nicely) into completing the set for me. 🖤
@Kayray @melissawiley omg omg omg
Those books pretty much made me me.

@Kayray @melissawiley this SOUNDS incredible…I just listened to the 6m trailer, and it seems like it will be an amazing experience! ❤️🎧💥

I loved this series when I was younger, and I’m excited for the 12 episodes which will be released daily the last two weeks of December!

@Kayray @melissawiley I grew up IDOLIZING The Dark is Rising! Gonna file this away for the future!
@jaymerryfield @melissawiley The Dark is Rising is nearly as important in my family as Tolkien — and that says it all!
@Kayray I've actually never read the whole series... I read Dark is Rising at least a few dozen times growing up, and got the whole series box set as an adult, but have only circled back to read Over Sea Under Stone.. I feel like this is encouragement to rectify that gap!
@jaymerryfield honestly, imho The Dark is Rising is by far the best, followed by Greenwitch and Grey King. OSUS is my least-favorite. I think I only read SotT once, and I don’t remember a damn thing
@Kayray This is one of my all-time favourites, so excited that it's getting an audio adaptation, especially one from a big fan of the novel!
@yayeahyeah right? The chances of it being spoiled at very low indeed. When I heard The Poem set to music I knew it would be fine!
@Kayray @melissawiley One of my favourite books of all time! A regular familiar re-read so this sounds right up my street!
@Kayray @melissawiley Oh, that is going to be the ultimate Christmas listen!
@Kayray @melissawiley oh fantastic... I love the dark is rising
@Kayray Oh wow! this is one of my favourite childhood books and I often re-read it around 21st December. Can't wait to listen to this with my kids.
@BeckyA @Kayray this is so exciting! I try to reread it every year too, they’re such incredible books.
@Kayray @melissawiley - this was one of the first series I really fell in love with, and read till it fell apart. Thanks for the heads-up
@Kayray @melissawiley I'm hoping for Paul's flute and "Good King Wenceslas".
@coremi @melissawiley oh god, yes yes yes yes yes, everyone singing and then the others fade away and it’s just Will and Merriman
@Kayray @melissawiley I first read the entire series translated into German when I was about Will's age in "The Dark is Rising". So many cultural references I didn't understand - shards of secrets adding to the mystery of the story. But I loved all the poems, prophecies and songs, so very much. And the Welsh parts in the later volumes.
@coremi yes! As a little American girl there was a lot that went over my head too. Oh man I’d kill for a German translation now — es wäre solche güte Übung!
@Kayray @melissawiley
Thank you! I hadn’t heard about this and I bet my old cohort of fellow fans hasn’t either. Good news.
@Kayray @melissawiley I remember this😁 This was my second book for a book challenge run by Glasgow Libraries back in the late 70s, early 80s. First book was The Iron Giant. #ChildrensBooks #GlasgowLibraries #SusanCooper #TheDarkIsRising #TheIronGiant #TedHughes
