Might need to figure out a plan for getting The Post’s journalists on Mastodon. What’s the right angle — hosting our own server?
@jeremybowers i think that could be a good way to “verify”
@fgregg @jeremybowers feels like the correct take
@databae @fgregg @jeremybowers There's some sort of decentralized verification system, whose mechanism I don't yet understand. One provider: https://www.presscheck.org/howitworks
howitworks

@databae @fgregg @jeremybowers I obviously just put an emoji next to my name.
@databae @fgregg @jeremybowers Ah, here's the mechanism.
@databae @fgregg @jeremybowers So, could add verification by adding a Mastodon social link to the author service and rendering tier. Two PRs, maybe 20 LOC.
@zubakskees @databae @jeremybowers at least on the mastadon.social client those rel=me verification indicators are only the user's profile. but [email protected] would be visible on every post.
@jeremybowers that's my take. then you can link journalists' profiles to something on The Post for verification, showing they are attested as legit members of the staff...
@jeremybowers ie if @databae linked to https://www.washingtonpost.com/people/steven-rich/ and it had the rel=me code embedded, it would show Steven as verified Washington Post staff...
@jeremybowers Yes. Absolutely. Keep in mind posts don’t migrate if someone leaves/changes instances.
@jeremybowers And the sidekiq jobs are like exponential to followers/engagement.
@jeremybowers yes, and under a domain that the post owns, that way you can be verified simpler.

@jeremybowers To me, the rel=me link on the employee profile pages makes more sense than an organizational instance.
@jeremybowers I think that really solves the "verified" issue and it means that you might be able to more easily onboard people since you have behind-the-scenes control
@jeremybowers yeah I've heard people saying that hosting your own server will be the closest thing to verification available here
@jeremybowers That would be my vote. Would also be a form of verification.
@jeremybowers yes, a server that the Post manages and controls, and only allows its employees to use.
@jeremybowers Added bonus is that it can talk to LDAP for authentication / account provisioning. One less password for them to forget. 😜

@jeremybowers

yes

social.washingtonpost.com

Let’s go

I’ll even come back to help

@jeremybowers yes I think it would be great if we could normalize companies hosting their own social, it just seems to make much more sense

@jeremybowers I think hosting your own server is the smartest way forward. Acts as a verification of sorts - I can see media and publications hosting their own servers - plus it gives you more control over your accounts and data.

Heck, I’m thinking about running my own one-person federated server just to ensure my data and account are never held hostage by another social media company.

@jeremybowers definitely gotta host your own
@jeremybowers I’d love to see this. Everyone talks about verification, which is cool, but honestly I think news orgs have a chance to help figure out what this fediwhatnot looks like from a product angle. If I’m a Post reader and I can follow the writers I like within the Post’s app, without having to figure out all the fiddly bits, that’s compelling(?). Of course, a bit more involved than setting up a server but, you know. Baby steps.
@jeremybowers what about investing in bolstering mastodon.social and the core maintainers?

@jeremybowers Although! See the employer/staffer power dynamic in enforcing network portability, which you'd need to deal with in policy https://newsletter.danhon.com/archive/s13e17-a-proposal-for-news-organization-mastodon/

@danhon @jeremybowers that does seem like the thorniest problem. For example, having gone through a layoff where my work email was instantly deleted that hammered home to me to be very cautious about using employer owned infrastructure for anything I care about.

@jeremybowers

Orgs have 4 options basically:
1. host a server that other people can sign up for. You now have a lot of operational problems.
2. host a server for your staff. You now have some operational problems.
3. set up an official account on somebody else's server. You now have become someone else's operational problem
4. Don't engage on Mastodon. You now have FOMO.

Is the fediverse about to get Fryed? (Or, “Why every toot is also a potential denial of service attack”)

Every time I post something that gets lots of engagement, I essentially end up carrying out a denial of service attack on myself. What does this say about the design of Mastodon and ActivityPub and the future of the fediverse?

@jeremybowers hosting a Post server gives your ppl credibility and the ability to defederate with other servers if they decide they want to harass. I think it’s a good way to go. I bet your IT ppl can do it in a snap.
@jeremybowers I think self-hosting a server would be a really good idea.
@jeremybowers I'm still trying to find an easy way just to recapture my data viz/news graphics network on here. It's so tedious to rebuild the same follow/following graph even in just one domain...
