Are we back to using hashtags again? I've been operating under the working assumption that they're kind of gauche for years now but just in case folks are looking through the #blackmetal #noise #drone or #ambient tags, my tunes sort of fall into that category.

@ElBartoArmy iirc you have to use them here, there’s no search function that looks for regular words unless they added it in the last week while i wasn’t looking
@fraxinus very good to know. Thank you!

@ElBartoArmy

Often Mastodon's features work the way they do because it was first populated by people who had been harassed on FB and the Birdsite.

For instance (not sorry), you cannot search Masto for a simple term. Only #hashtags. Say you're having a conversation about iguanas with some of your mutual followers. Anti-iguana trolls will not be able to search for "iguana", find your conversation, and drop into it to say, "Iguana luvers suck!"

But if you are wanting to connect with new iguana fanciers on Mastodon, slipping an #iguanas hashtag somewhere into your posts will allow people to search and find them.

@Voline makes sense! Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful response
@Voline @ElBartoArmy I'll miss the Twitter guy who responded to every post about Oat Milk with how it's just canola oil and sugar

@ElBartoArmy @Voline TIL. And I *love* this design decision! Elegant and so considerate.

Opt-in by default via hashtag.

@Voline @ElBartoArmy

Ok. How do I add people to follow so I can see their posts?

@Zmikeh

Check out @feditips pinned post for a great primer.

@Voline @ElBartoArmy as is often the case, #MidjourneyAI did not understand "anti-iguana troll," but gave some interesting results.
@Voline @ElBartoArmy I’m not trying to be combative—I’m just a little dense. What’s to stop anti-iguana trolls from searching #iguana instead of iguana?

@klg19
They can do that, sure. But they are not going to find anyone using "iguana" in conversation.

To turn it around. If you don't want the iguana-haters to do a search-and-destroy on your iguana chat, don't use the hashtag and they won't be able to do it.

The more extroverted and rambunctious iguana-fanciers use #iguanas a lot because they're feisty and they're ready with a quip and a block for the haters. Not everyone has the energy. And that's okay, they can choose to not use the tag.

@ElBartoArmy @Voline now off to create an ā€œIguana Fanciersā€ list
@ElBartoArmy @Voline I don’t understand, why can’t the trolls just search for #iguanas then jump into the conversation and say ā€œiguanas suckā€ ?

@Voline i see, thanks for the explanation!
@Voline @ElBartoArmy it’s like in the old days when we would write #blog posts with hyperlinks in the text. I still do that now so it feels familiar. Writing on mastodon that way is like slipping into a comfortable pair of jeans.
