I just scrolled through the local timeline, and I only saw one post with image descriptions. I also saw several people have names written in fancy fonts that screen readers cannot read. There was a lot of this on Twitter, and I really hope this isn't a trend that is gaining more traction here as well. There are a lot of blind people on Mastodon, and we can't make sense of fancy fonts or know what's in your photos without image descriptions.
@yessie Might be your instance.
@kev I've been on Mastodon for 4 years. I've noticed a decline in the amount of alt text being posted to timelines on both my accounts. There may be other instances that are better, but I don't want to be on a blindness or disability centered instance. It has less to do with the instance I'm on and more to do with all the new users.
@yessie I guess best thing to do is educate as much as you can. People are bound to eventually figure it out.

@yessie Yikes, sorry folks. I'm guilty of this. :( I've posted a few Astro photos and did not add a description.

I will do so in the future and go back and add descriptions to the already posted images.. if I can figure it out. :)
Again. apologies..

@yessie I only joined yesterday but I’ve been adding descriptions to my pics. #UDL #Inclusive
@squirrelalert that's awesome! Thank you so much! 😁

@yessie @davidbragg There is a setting in most Mastodon clients that will prevent you from posting an image without giving it alt text.

Very useful for the forgetful.

@davidbragg @fashiontechguru really? I wasn't aware of this. That's great!
I always try to use the ALT function for my photos, but what @yessie says is so true

@yessie I just posted a stupid meme, saw your post, and said _fuck_ and went back and deleted and reposted it with alt text.

A pleasant side-effect is that hopefully people will choose the very best memes to shitpost since they should be putting a bit of work into them to add the alt text!

@yessie Thanks for explaining this Yessie. Now I know I will do this.
