Love it when people who clearly do not have seen the CW discussion among POC tell me, a POC, what we've been talking about.
People want a culture of consent here but POC have not consented to racism. And now white people want to be able to opt into seeing how POC experience racism? That is the definition of white comfort. No, this is not gonna fly with me.

"But what about other POC?"

But that's not what's being discussed. What's being discussed is white people wanting POC to CW racism. Remember that axes of power/privilege matter in these discussions.

I am absolutely livid that someone on Mastodon would want me to consider an "opt in" culture for white people to see racism. White people, on average and given the option, would NOT opt in. That's what white privilege does.
It's also incredibly frustrating that people are "nice" about this discussion. I feel like if I shoot back with a snappy remark, I'll be seen as an "instigator". Ugh.
@amber And then the fact that most folks would misunderstand you, most likely. Why I follow you up here. My previous account? I can no longer access it as of last night. All because I tried to disagree with somebody.

@cambridgeport90 this you?

let's talk about those axes of power and privilege again

or rather, let's not, and you do some reflection

@amber

Thanks, @starfall, for the info.

@cambridgeport90, is this true?

@amber @starfall No, it isn't. I'm completely unsure what they are even referring to. I have received several messages like this in the past several days.
@amber absolutely shoot back. Fuck 'em, and fuck white comfort. We don't get to demand shit like this at the cost of real awareness.
@slavsquatch I did but muted the person because I don't want to deal with them any further. 😂
@amber Yes. I’m not here merely to be comfortable. I’m here to learn, especially in terms of de-centering myself.
@amber It’s not *just what white privilege DOES. It’s literally what white privilege IS. When we have the freedom (privilege) to opt out of exposure to circumstances some other people cannot opt out of, that’s privilege. Condoning structures here that facilitate that easy opt out is the SAME as segregating buses, restaurants, etc. let’s put that crap behind us and learn to be good humans together!
@amber aye, they can fuck off. white people love to opt in to not seeing racism.
@amber I agree. Are there any spaces that do NOT have "opt-in" culture for white people though? As you say, white people always have the option to opt out from seeing/discussing racism.
@s_bosbach These types of spaces need to be constructed and moderated. The best practice is anti-racist white people and some BIPOC people (who will be compensated) to set expectations, consequences, and hold to them. That's the only way anyone would learn.
@amber That sounds super productive. As you say though, white folks who want to avoid such spaces will always be able to do so.
@amber "opt-in" for hatred, isn't that twitter now? isn't that why we left? anyway, I suppose the fedi-verse can have it's toxic servers, but other instances can just tune them out. some active monitoring needs to happen though.

@amber 100% behind you on this.

i brought this issue up to the mods for my main instance & this is a first attempt to clarify that CWs are *optional* & not to be used as a club to silence people’s experiences or stigmatize their existence.

wasn’t able to find any other examples to draw from, so offering it up & also interested in feedback if anyone has any https://jawns.club/@alexhillman/109353709751419648

@amber I support this. The only thing I would personally prefer to have under a CW would be graphic images of people who have been injured.
