@[email protected] I hope you can see this. I’m told there’s a blocking issue on servers. I can’t follow you at the moment. As soon as I can, I will again.
@EmmaKennedy I've heard a few things like this, plus instances blocking instances. Seems disconcerting.
@kepilo @EmmaKennedy Different instances have different policies, for example a lot of servers block mastodon.scot due to controversial decisions regarding who they let join.
@WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy This renders Mastodon far less of a good thing if they're going to be blocking and effectively restricting access. On the face of it, sounds worse than Twitter.

@kepilo @EmmaKennedy no, it's better than Twitter. If you don't like the moderation policy of your instance find another. But keep in mind that almost all instances block things Twitter let slide like racism, transphobia, homophobia, etc.

The benefit is of course that unlike Twitter hate speech and other disgusting activities actually are blocked.

@WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy I just wonder whether there’s too much of a variation in policy, and that it’s hard to know what’s what?
@kepilo @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy surely customer choice is always a good thing?

@WhyNotZoidberg @kepilo @EmmaKennedy within the main "Fediverse" it looks like you can

a) chose an instance that minimally blocks other instances - so you can see lots but are at risk of being blocked by other

b) the converse. You end up choosing an instance that is quite block-happy, which ends up being seem by most instances but you won't see too much from more controversial

c) find/make a small instance and hope the blocking policy is what you want, and that it doesn't do much that's controversial and blocked by most in the Fediverse.

Looking at the instance mentioned in your first post, the admin apologized for a mistake, so presumably let something through that annoyed a lot.

@ParkinJim @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy I’m definitely not at the stage of freling remotely confident to quit Twitter.

I detest Evil Mollusk, and I think he’ll destroy Twitter, but Mastodon with blocking, instances acting oddly, etc, etc isn’t really the Twitter alternative I’m looking for.

For me, a network is either OPEN, or I can’t work with it. #mastodon #support take note - lots will be thinking like I am.

@kepilo @EmmaKennedy that's not a threat. Mastodon was going fine without Twitter migrants and if you are not willing to be respectful of minorities and help create a safe space for all then most instances would prefer you going back. And that of course goes for everyone.

@WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy It’s not a threat. It’s a statement of how I currently feel.

Where does all this ‘rot’ about respecting, etc others come from?

Of course I do and will continue to do this. This is not the conversation. As far as my screen tells me, I / we were talking about the willi-nilli blocking of whole instances by trigger happy admins, and the real danger of unchallengeable blocks being applied for no discernable reason!

@kepilo @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy yup.

It is the issue with decentralised social media

@ParkinJim @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy Not decided, and have no reason to take Mastodon off ‘test’, but I’m not sure this is for me. Sounds potentially chaotic & disparate.
@WhyNotZoidberg @kepilo @EmmaKennedy not really. You might like moderating instance of your instance (or know nothing about it, like I just learned from you about some controversies regarding mastodon.scot where I am) and yet be blocked by other instances thus massively limiting your reach.
@TOrynski @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy It all seems to be a bit hit & miss at the moment…
@kepilo @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy yeah. And if I have to constantly monitor what beef moderators of my instance have with moderators.of other servers and who blocks whom to ensure that I can interact with people hosted in different places then I hardly see this as improvement...
@kepilo @WhyNotZoidberg @EmmaKennedy
Who is allowed to say what where? An Escher-like conundrum of balancing 'freedoms to'/'freedoms from'. Humanity so rapidly descends into fisticuffs instead of engaging in listening, debate & compromise. This is just the latest phase of our chequered evolution.
The real trouble is when digital bust-ups foment real-world agro.
I'm a 'militant centrist' (term used by @simonpease) - outspoken advocate of basing debate on evidence & not going to extremes.
@LeedsTours @kepilo @EmmaKennedy @simonpease again, check the rules of your instance and also remember free speech as the Right defines it doesn't apply outside public irl spaces.
@WhyNotZoidberg @LeedsTours @kepilo @EmmaKennedy @simonpease I think that half the problem is that much of the hate speech has become normalised by social media, the immoral talent of the finger to type words that a mouth would never utter. We need to strive together to remind ourselves how a humane society should conduct itself.

@lochalshlad @WhyNotZoidberg @LeedsTours @EmmaKennedy @simonpease

I’m not talking about hate speech. Hate speech is hate speech, and most of us would realise it has to be dealt with robustly.

I am talking about ‘trigger happy’ (sic) admins blocking whole instances with no reason or discernable necessity in sight.

@WhyNotZoidberg @kepilo @EmmaKennedy

Is there anywhere that shows what instances are blocked and which instances are blocking them?

@WhyNotZoidberg @kepilo @EmmaKennedy
Controversial decisions...? I don't understand: I get that in a federated space, any one instance is free to block another, but an explanation of why would be helpful. Individual cases must have been pretty serious in order to trigger such action. Where would I / others find examples or an explanation?
@kepilo @EmmaKennedy also of course virtually all instances block known Nazi instances and Gab's instance (which is, let's face it, just prominent Nazi instance) for example since it goes against 99.99% of instances coc and Mastodon is fighting to be regarded as a safe place for the very minorities persecuted on all other social networks.
@EmmaKennedy I'm getting 30+ 40+ notifications that aren't anything, what go on?
@Robotdog9 Dunno. Probably a shakeup as the dust settles over here.
@EmmaKennedy Someone should probably flag to some of the notables on the bad server. Stephen Fry, Layla Moran
@EmmaKennedy Also, Scarfolk and Zoe Kleinman (for anyone that wants to point this out to them on the bird site)
@EmmaKennedy Hey, Emma, thank you for the message. I think the problem has been sorted now. Hopefully we can see each again. Up the reds!
